Answer: Low Platelets does not mean you can't have surgery... As long as your hematologist clears you for surgery, you should be fine. There are other tests that can be done such as bleeding time to see if your blood will clot properly. A platelet count of 75 is low, but not horribly so. Sometimes a transfusion can be done prior to surgery, or other medicines can be used. We often work with hematologists to determine the best course of action with patients such as yourself, and as long as everyone is on the same page, everything is usually fine.

Answer: Rhinoplasty and low platelets It's possible to have rhinoplasty in my experience with platelets above 50K, and DDAVP can be used to reverse some of the effects of the low platelet numbers, but you have to be seen in person to really get proper recommendations. Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Be certain your surgeon is properly certified. I've attached a link where you can start your search.

Answer: Low platelet count and rhinoplasty bleeding is the most common complication of rhinoplasty. Anything that increases your risk should concern both you and your surgeon. Safety is always first. There are lab errors that don't represent a true bleeding disorder. If that is what you have and you have a clearance from the hematologist, it should not be an issue. Make sure you have a clearance letter from the hematologist and bring it to the consultation. The surgeon can call and clarify if he or she has any questions.

Answer: Platelets Hello and thank you for your question. I would trust your hematologist's advice. If your hematologist has given you clearance for surgery, then it is likely safe to proceed forward. Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person. Best wishes and good luck. Richard G. Reish, M.D. Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
