Do I need compression socks during surgery?

Thank you for the question;  For most patient I  recommend compression  for the lower extremities.  Also in surgery we use pumps to mountain the blood circulating and decrease the chances for blood clothes in the legs .

  

  

Generally speaking, your surgeon should provide you with everything you’ll need during your recovery. Compression socks are often given to you by your surgeon.

This is something you should check with your surgeon about, we provide this for our patients along with their garment. Your surgeon will be letting you know how to prepare for your surgery, and if there is anything you need to provide for yourself. Each surgeon has their own protocol. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. Good luck.

Dear Bellame919, Thank you for your question. The board certified Plastic Surgeon / office usually provides the patient with all the information for things needed, prior and after surgery. Compression stockings are an important factor in decreasing the rate of blood clots in your legs. They are usually supplied at the hospital. As far as postoperative care, I give my patients explicit instructions which are written down. I don't ask them to get anything special for the healing period, unless there are special circumstances.

Based upon your individual risk factors, your PS will provide you with a list of pre and post-operative instructions which will detail what you will be responsible for procuring.  Follow his/her guidelines for optimum recovery.

Each surgeon will have his or her own protocol for patients who are about to undergo surgery. In my office, we typically require most patients who are having surgery to purchase compression stockings to be worn during surgery and in the days following the procedure. Mommy makeovers typically involve multiple procedures, so we would advise you to wear them. That being said, it is best to ask your surgeon's office what their preference is. Thank you for your questions. If you are having surgery at a reputable surgery center or facility, they should be providing you with these supplies, it should not be your responsibility. It is important that during any surgical procedure, you do the most to prevent DVT and this should include at least SCDs. Bellame919 Good idea! Compression stockings after this type of surgery can help prevent blood from pooling in the legs and is a reasonable option. Most plastic surgeons have specific postoperative recommendations after surgery and you should discuss this option with your surgeon. Good luck.
