I am considering Voluma for facial volume loss in the cheek area right under orbital rim. I needed to know the cons of using Voluma, such as displacement of the filler, discoloration of overlying skin, or stretching and sagging/wrinkling of overlying skin, as a result of this injectible? Also, can injecting it in the cheeks lift the nasolabial folds and folds at corner of mouth?

Answer: Voluma for Midface Enhancement: Volumetric Filler for the lower eyelids and Cheeks Voluma is a long lasting hyaluronic acid based gel filler which is indicated for midface enhancement. The midface does include the cheeks and the lower eyelids, and Voluma is injected along the orbital rim (bone) to enhance and fill this area. The effect is long lasting for up to 2 years. The risk of discoloration and skin effects are negligible because it is injected in the deep tissue. The "Voluma Lift" is very difficult to deliver as fillers do not lift and will have little if any effect on the nasolabial fold. A Midface Lift will rejuvenate the cheek and lower eyelid, and can have an effect on the lower cheek region.

Answer: Voluma to fill sagging cheeks: The cons Voluma is an FDA approved hyaluronic acid (HA) based filler designed to augment the volume of the cheek area. Like with any other HA fillers, there are some risk like post injection swelling, bruising, migration and unevenness. The risks associated with voluma are not only related with the filler itself, but also with the injection technique and the patient selection. A patient in the 30s or 40s may have an outstanding result with voluma while a patient in the 60s ( that very likely needs a facelift) may not. Therefore, the benefits and risk of voluma for mid face and peri-orbital augmentation (around the eye) should be based on a physical examination. Voluma is not FDA approved for use in the nasolabial folds or corners of the mouth. However, it doesn't preclude the doctor from injecting in in other areas "off -lable".Patients interested in voluma for facial volume rejuvenation should consider making a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon specialized in Voluma injections
