What medication best prevents post-operative vomiting?

Many factors may result in nausea or vomiting after surgery. Zofran is the best option for trying to prevent this after surgery. 

There are multiple options for post op vomiting, and some people may respond better to one over another.  Zofran and phenergan are commonly prescribed.  In addition, if you are prone to vomiting after anesthesia, you may benefit from Emend, which is one pill you take prior to anesthesia to decrease your chances of vomiting.  I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon prior to surgery.  

I am a fan of Zofran post-operatively. Most patients tolerate this medication well. However, most of my patients don't experience post-op nausea, in part, because I give them a combination of steroids and Zofran through their IV during the procedure. In most cases, this takes care of any nausea or vomiting that might otherwise have occurred. Good luck!

In my experience it's best to PREVENT post-op vomiting in patients with a combination of medications used DURING surgery.  For the small subset of patients that we do not succeed in doing so, we use Zofran ODT commonly with good results. 

Vomiting  Can occur from a variety of issues such as swallowing blood down the back of throat from the rhinoplasty procedure, the anesthesia side effects, or narcotic medications.  There is no guarantee prevention, just reduction chance for it to occur.  There are multiple medications  which can be prescribed by your surgeon and/or anesthesiologist which include scopolamine patch, Zofran, and some intravenous medications which can also help as well.

Zofran is my drug of choice for nausea. It works very well. When cost us a concern, Compazine is an alternative.

I usually prescribe Zoran and a backup such as compazine. Controlling post-op pain is also key to limit post-op nausea, and good anesthesia during the case like using propofol when indicated. Best to review with the anesthesiologist.

It is very important to notify your surgeon and the anesthesiologist ahead of time so that you can be treated for post-op nausea and vomiting. Treatment may be started not only after but before surgery and also during your hospital stay. There are several medications that can be used to treat post-op nausea and vomiting. While all of these medications are effective, your surgeon will determine which one(s) is best for you; depending on your drug allergies, medications you are taking routinely, your medical history, etc. Again, notify your surgeon and discuss your options to prevent post-op nausea and vomiting.
