Antibiotics before twilight surgery for breast argumentation?

Question

I am at the end of a viral infection which has had me coughing. That part is better. Now I believe I am getting a slight sinus infection. I want to take a dose of amoxcilliin as I'm having breast argumentation in 4 days. I cannot postpone the surgery. I am having twilight surgery. Should amoxcilliin be fine? The surgeon will also administer an antibiotic before the surgery as well.

I would recommend reaching out to your surgeon to discuss your head and neck issues.  Implantation of a foreign body like a breast implant should be done under ideal circumstances, with no evidence of infection taking place anywhere in the body.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for your question.  You should chat with your plastic surgeon about your symptoms and whether or not you should proceed with surgery.  An infection in the body may compromise your implants and its better to be safe than sorry.    Your surgeon is in the best position to advise you.

It is best that you discuss this with your Plastic Surgeon.If you have an infection like a Sinus infection and have a prosthetic device implanted in you, the bacteria that is circulating in your circulation may increase the risk of breast implant infection and related complications.

Having a Breast Augmentation while having an active or suspected infection anywhere in the body is a severe and costly mistake regardless of the way anesthesia is done. Breast implants cannot fight off infection. As a result any bacteria in the blood stream can attach to the implants and set up s permanent infection resulting in severe scarring around and distortion and hardening of the breasts. Correcting breast capsular contracture is both challenging and very expensive. The best course is complete eradication of the infection before having your breast augmentation. Peter Aldea MDMemohis, TN

You should discuss this with your surgeon. Breast augmentation is an elective procedure and your physical condition should be excellent before surgery.  An active sinus infection is a relative contraindication for breast augmentation.  So, it may be that your will need to postpone your surgery to decrease your risk of complications.Best wishes,Dr. Connall

Amoxicillin is reasonable antibiotic for use in this situation but I would not recommend starting antibiotics without discussing this with your surgeon.  Even on the weekend, there should be an on call physician to answer your questions and call in a prescription if thought to be indicated.

It is very important that he not have an infection such as a sinus infection  when you have breast augmentation surgery.  Any bacterial seeding in the bloodstream can impact to the implant and possibly lead to capsular contracture.It is very important that you communicate directly with your plastic surgeon and notify him or her of your concerns.  Please do not follow Internet advice  and do not self medicate.  This could lead to serious problems with your  implants down the road.
