I am trying to join the Marine Corps and I have a crooked nose and a small bump on the bridge of it. Can I get those surgeries to correct it without being disqualified. And if not, can I get those surgeries done once I'm in the Marine Corps?
Answer: Nasal Surgery and the military You can have your nose done prior to enrollment into the military. There is nothing to disqualify you from active duty. You would need to wait about two weeks before your nasal surgery before you can do heavy lifting and exercise so I would say if you did the surgery at least one month before you should be healed up and fine to serve.

Answer: Will a Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty surgery disqualify me from the military? No this will definitely not disqualify you. I would recommend 2-3 weeks of healing prior to enlistment to ensure that your nose and nasal bones are adequately healed. Best.Stephen Weber MD, FACS

Answer: Nasal surgery Hello and thank you for your question. The best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. A history of nasal surgery will not disqualify you from military service. The septoplasty will likely greatly improve your breathing also. Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person. Best wishes and good luck. Richard G. Reish, M.D. Harvard-trained plastic surgeon

Answer: Will a Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty Disqualify Me from the Military? Thank you for your question. While I am not an expert on medical policies within the military, I cannot imagine that having a septoplasty and/or rhinoplasty would disqualify you from joining the Marine Corps. After having this surgery, I can only imagine that you would breathe better through your nose. To be on the safe side, I would check with your recruiter and/or local contact before undergoing this procedure. Be sure to consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty. And thank you for your willingness to serve in the Marine Corps!I hope that this helps,–David Gilpin

Answer: Military service after rhinoplasty I cannot imagine there would be a disqualification for the military because of a nasal surgery. I do not know any specific policy but I have performed nasal surgery on active military members.
