What works best to conceal acne scars?

By Sharon at RealSelf on 11 Jun 2009

i've given up trying to treat my acne scars.  Lasers, creams, light treatments, etc aren't making a big difference. As a result i need to know how to cover up or conceal the acne scarring. My skin is brown / olive in tone.

The best way to hide acne scars is to first use a filler serum and then apply a concealer. Blot with powder to set. The filler serum will build the depression in the skin so it is on an even surface and the concealer will hide the discolorations.

There are various types of treatments to deal with acne. Natural remedies are very effective and they do not have side effects. Some include Aloe Vera juice applied on the infected areas, a paste of Rose water and Sandalwood etc.

Use concealer on a skinny little brush, place on actual scar/blemish and set it with a powder foundation instead of loose powder.

Match your skin tone exactly with a concealer….maybe need to blend a couple shades to do so, and try to use natural daylight to get the most accurate look at what you’re doing. If the scars are recessed or raised, there’s not much cosmetically one can do.

Scars go through different periods of evolution. First, they are purplish and thick, then they become red, then pink. In fair skinned people, they turn white as the end result. In ethnic skin types, the scars can be devastating because they leave a dark hyperpigmentation spot that can last years. Additionally, people can get pock marks and undulations in their skin from serious acne breakouts. Here are my suggestions: For purple to red scars (usually less than 1 year old) on fair skin: use a green-tinted spot concealer (green and red make tan) For darkly pigmented persons, sunscreen (at least SPF 30) daily will help the dark spots from becoming more noticeable (the sun makes skin get dark and can worsen these dark spots!) For pock marks and undulations, surgical interventions with resurfacing is usually the preferred method of treatment An ounce of prevention is worth years of heart ache. Find a system that works for you.

Acne scarring is perhaps worse than the acne itself. My acne scars weren't horrible. They probably weren't even that noticeable after I put on my foundation. However, I certainly noticed them and that was all it took to bother ME. If you've got acne scars, you may feel a bit helpless. But you don't have to because there are alternatives to getting rid of acne scars. And you CAN do something about it. So what do you do about it? Well, there is totally a solution ... actually there are many. These are NATURAL treatments. Now, just because you hear the word "natural", I don't want you to shake your head and think you need to just buy some over the counter miracle cream. These remedies WORK! And you'll find that by consistently using them, your acne scars WILL fade just like mine did. So without further ado, here are my favorite natural acne scar solutions: Vitamin E Don't underestimate the power of this healing lotion. You can get it at any drugstore in topical form. I have a HUGE bottle of it under my sink :) . Vitamin E naturally heals scars by moisterizing the damaged skin. Use it everyday to fade away acne scars. Cocoa Butter This one should be used carefully. If your acne is not already under control, cocoa butter does pose the threat of additional breakouts. However, if you're using the 3 Day Cure technique and your skin is finally clear, this is a powerful healing tool. Cocoa Butter will soften skin, lighten the scars and make them fade into nothing. I love this one. By the way, Cocoa Butter also works great on fading stretch marks. Honey Okay, this is totally gonna change your life! Honey works overtime on acne & acne scars. Yes, Honey! When I first learned about this natural remedy, I was pretty bewildered. The sound of it alone is confusing. Honey is a sticky, sugary substance. How can it possibly clear up skin? Honey kills bacteria while simultaneously lessens the red look of irritated skin. The acidity in the honey evens out your skin tone, shrinks current pimples and will give your skin a softer feel. Listen, I know you may be skeptical of this solution. I was at first, then I tried it. This natural acne scar remedy works great. Lemon Lemon will help clear up acne as well as fade acne scars. Plus your face will smell like a freshly shined harwood floor, so that's a plus ;) The acidity in the juice will lighten the redness of the scars and balance your skin's pH levels to prevent future breakouts. Give it a shot.

Um...I would go with a half cut lemon on your face every night before you go to sleep...dont use soap...just use it after your shower...I recommend that you put it on like maybe 5 min after the shower...Do that everyday and you will notice a difference in a month or so depending on how many products you used. Honey is a great way to remove any red marks on your face. For me in the beginning I used Honey and nutmeg 2 times a week for my red marks and sleep with it and then the rest of the days i used the lemon juice. Trust me this will work. Good luck.

Alexis Patricia, Acne is caused from internal imbalances in the body. No amount of washing will free you from acne. Search for information about products that cleanse the body internally. When the liver and kidneys cannot rid your body of toxins the leftover excretes from your skin (also an organ). A local herbal store with staff certified in natural healing helped me become acne free after 28 years without expensive creams and scrubs. Hope this helps.

Hey, Let me tell you what really worked for me. You'll be surprised but Apple cider vinegar is the cure. Dilute it, 1:1 (depends on your skin sensitivity), you can try it by itself but it gave me rashes, and apply it with a q tip or may be a cotton ball (if the break out is more). Beware not to use one cotton ball on your entire face. Use one for your forehead, one for your nose, one for cheeks & then for chin & neck. What I mean here is that you don't want to spread the acne bacteria to the 'clear' part of your face. In short, different cotton balls/ q tips for break out & clear areas. It is possible that you get a break out next day (That's what someone told me but I never got one, but I can guarantee that you will break out 90% less than usual. Let me tell you what I did: Wash face with warm water & oil free cleanser. Use a clean paper towel to wipe. Apply ACV like said above & let it dry by itself. After 5 minutes, apply an OIL FREE moisturizer. A lot of people said they don't moisturize in the initial stage as they want to dry their acne. I don't know if you can do that, try & see what works best for you. VERY VERY IMPORTANTLY, apply a sunblock every morning to top this, even if you are not going out in the sun. It will help your skin from making your scars worst.Trust me, I hated it because its terrible greasy & I used to break out even more. You can try any sunblock for BABY. It works!! I did this at least 4 times a day. ACV will burn for a while but that means it is working. Do a patch test on a small area (with break out) by applying ACV there and keep it for 15 minutes. If it doesn't turn red (worst),it works for you. If you want to quicken this process, along with the above, drink 2 tablespoon of ACV in water (its awful). I drink it with honey & green tea for a better taste. ACV also helped me in acne scars (can't tell you how my face looked before). You can apply it in the same way you do on your break out. I try & rub it GENTLY WITH COTTON BALL on my scars. They are almost gone. A lot of people suggested that even urine helps. Try!! I hope this would work for you. Good Luck!!

Yea, all of these work when being consistent with them. Another remedie that i use is 1 spoon of gram flour, a pinch of turmeric powder, and choose ONLY ONE to make a paste (rose water, lemon juice, or water). Leave it on face to dry, wash it off with warm water(a little tricky to take off but u'll get it) this helps even skin tone and clears pores. Works best with ethinic skin tone.

I have had sever acne in the past and was left with unattractive scars on my face. I purchased the Dr. Max Powers Scar Serum from their website online - it was medium expensive for a scar cream - because I needed a solution. The Max Powers Scar Cream does work well, but don't expect to see results instantly. You need to apply it regularly and consistently for about a month in order to see results. It really does work though. My scars are much more toned down and less visible.

having acne for over a year nearly has totally affected my self-confidence. with it coming and going, i wish i could find something to aid it other than topical drugs and the pill. does the honey and lemon idea really work, if so how long before you can see significant improvement? also, what makeup is reccomended and what technique is best to apply makeup to acne/acne scarred face?

Not only is acne one of the most problematic skin conditions to suffer from, it can leave its mark literally even after your acne has been cleared up. For many teens and adults, having acne scars can cause feelings of insecurity. There are various methods for acne scar removal but not all of them are 100% effective.

why don't you give another cream a try? my friends used this for their acne scars too and eventually their scars faded. it's called Metaderm. it may be effective on you too.

I think natural acne treatment is best option for acne patient as this treatment is safe and secure. It is better to Drink a minimum of eight glasses of filtered water a day and take a supplement containing zinc, Vitamin C and E in a formula designed for skin complaints.

hi...

We cant do acne scar technically scars at all. They Hyper pigmentation, which is normally doesnt help to scar by using scar cream. Kojic acid, hydroquinone, or just look for help with Hyper pigmentation. And remember that sunscreen products bear the increased because the sun make Hyper pigmentation worse. Well, I don't really know any remedies for, but I know helps out staying. I hope this stuff is useful.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars
keljoy82 27 Oct 2011
I have struggled with acne/cystic acne for about 15 years and I have had to deal with numerous scars left behind on my face. About a year ago I started using Neutrogena's "Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle Serum" every night. I don't really have an issue with wrinkles but I had read that it's good to start using products with retinol when you're in your late 20's. Retinol speeds up the cell turnover process so that you gain new skin faster. But what I found was that it actually faded my acne scars more quickly. It's not a miracle formula but I did find that it sped up the process. And I believe it is because of the retinol. Hope this helps.

My acne scars were horrendous. I am of Asian origin and the scars left pockmarks. When I was 27, the surgeon who removed my tonsils, performed a dermabrasion and while it did not completely removed the marks, I was at least psyched into believing that they were not that bad.

My home-made natural scar lightener is very simple--i mix oatmeal with a little milk and nuke it for a few seconds. I then make a paste by adding lemon juice and a little honey. I apply it over my face and let it stay there for 5-10 minutes. I rinse and use moisturizer. I prefer Neutrogena products but I change brands once I am done with it to make sure my skin does not develop resistance to the product.

In 2007, I paid for a Fraxel peel. It made my skin glow but for this glow to continue, I have to maintain it so I still use my true and tried oatmeal "facial." My skin looks flawless with a light powder but I can still see where the scars are. My dermatologist even gave me an acid peel long ago but he told me the best advice he could is "Eat healthy, use non-comedogenic products, drink a lot of water, use sunblock, use moisturizer and remember that when a man's eyes are THIS CLOSE to your face, the light has to be off already." I laughed at that but saw the wisdom in that advice.

I totally agree with your oatmeal paste remedy. Not only is it great for acne and scars it's great for helping you look younger. I'm 45 and people never believe me and think I'm 30-34. I also add brown sugar (or white) mixed with the oatmeal. After the oatmeal I wash with Dove soap and end with palmers cocoa butter. I work in a major department store and even the makeup people ask what I do and use. I laugh when I see all these women spending hundreds on over the counter products that don't work. If only they knew!
