How Do Ablative Lasers Treat Fine Lines?

Does the success of ablative laser treatments have more to do with the cause of the fine lines? For instance, if fine lines are the result of sun damage, ablation would be quite successful as the underlying skin is otherwise healthy. But if fine lines are caused by a weakened collagen matrix, what are the chances that ablating the top layers of the skin prove useful?
