I have an irrational fear of needles. I'm seeing videos of people getting implants and I'm noticing some look like they are givin an IV or something in their arm right before surgery. Do I have to get that in my arm in order to get breast implants?
Answer: Fear of Needles Prior to Surgery Everyone undergoing breast augmentation surgery requires an IV. This is required for several medications (needed to sedate you and/or put you to sleep for the surgery), antibiotics, and fluid hydration. There are several ways an IV can be placed in patients who have a fear of needles. Most of the time a topical anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin to numb the area, and an oral sedative can be given to help relax the patient. I would not let this fear prevent you form having surgery. Speak to your plastic surgeon about your concerns so they can make this portion of your experience as smooth as possible. Best wishes.

Answer: Do I need IV before getting breast implants? Great question. When undergoing general anesthesia, it is necessary to start an IV before hand so the anesthesiologist can administer medications, so you will not feel the surgical procedure. You can get a prescription for a relaxing medication to have on board that morning before you have the IV. You can also get a topical cream to numb the area that the nurse can put on 30 minutes prior to IV. Also, the anesthesia office will call you a week or two before your surgery to introduce themselves, and ask questions about your medical history. This sometimes alleviates some of the anxiety associated with anesthesia, and steps involved the morning of your surgery. I hope this has helped. Best wishes. Answer: IV fro Surgery? It is standard for any patient undergoing a surgery that involves even a small amount of sedation to have an IV. This allows both medeicine and rehydrating fluids to move through into your body throughout the surgery. In my practice, if a patient has a fear of needles, a medicine can be prescribed and given beforehand to sedate a person and help alleviate their fears of a needle. Usually the IV comes out before the patient knows what is going on as well. I hope this helps.
