Pulling/friction on transplant area? How long after a 1100 graft transplant until I can train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu again?

Question

I received a transplant to the crown of my head one month ago. Scabs are gone and it doesn't itch. For a very poor visual Brazilian Jiu-jitsu...think wrestling but with chokes, joint locks, etc. How long after transplant can I train again? Nobody will be grabbing a handful of my hair and pulling BUT there are situations where someone may have their arm wrapped around my neck in a headlock and to get out, I force/pop my head out of their grip, thus dragging their arm across my hair.

As other doctors have said here, 2 weeks is the generally accepted amount of downtime after hair transplant with NeoGraft. Because you’re a month post-op, it should be quite safe for you to get back to jiu-jitsu. By now, the transplanted follicles have securely “taken” and you don’t risk any major damage to your results.

Strenuous activity is discouraged before two weeks post op. For something as contact intensive as BJJ, one additional week should suffice. After this point, the grafts should be nicely healed and extraction will necessitate a process as invasive as the grafting process it self.As always, consult with your board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) for his/her specific recommendations.

Excellent question.  I've trained for several years in BJJ myself and I know how many different scenarios could lead to friction of your scalp.  However, at one month, all the follicles that are going to 'take' have taken.  I usually allow my patients to shower normally after 10 days and basically resume all activities after two weeks.  Good luck and best wishes.

I advise patients to wait a minimum of three weeks before resuming strenuous activity that can raise heart rate or blood pressure and change blood flow dynamics to the tissues that are nurturing your very expensive grafts.

It is best to ask your surgeon about post operative care as each doctor has their unique regimen.   In general most doctors recommend 2 to 3 weeks of refraining from strenuous exercise.

As always, your board-certified facial plastic surgeon should have the final say on when you can safely return to your normal activities, especially if they include high-impact sports like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. However, for most patients recovering from a hair transplant procedure, you should be able to return to your active, pre-treatment schedule two weeks after your procedure.  Of course, take all the necessary precautions you can to protect your treatment area. Make sure to schedule a follow-up appointment with the board-certified facial plastic surgeon who performed your treatment for their opinion. Good luck!

You would probably be OK at I month to proceed with Jui Jitsu, but I would wait 6 weeks before I had anyone get real rough with my hair transplant grafts to be safe.

At one month you're safe to resume any activities, including Jiu-Jitsu. Generally the wait period is 2 weeks for strenuous exercise, a week or two more for contact sports, so if you're past a month you should be safe! At this point your grafts are as strong as your regular hair, so you can treat them more or less the same. 
This is of course assuming there is nothing unique/unusual about your case that would require a longer waiting period- it definitely wouldn't hurt to double check with your doctor.
