Can sleeping with my face on my arm/shoulder cause voluma and sculptra to move?

Question

I am trying to sleep flat on my back but I move during my sleep and wake up on my arm/shoulder, which is kind of bony and uncomfortable. I know this is kind of a strange question but just wanted to know. Trying to get a better pillow to keep my head in place.

Thank you for your question. There is essentially no downtime after Voluma injections. Patients can head back to work, go shopping, run errands, or whatever else it is they would normally be doing. It is smart to consider your filler area and avoid any prolonged pressure - such as sleeping - however, you should ultimately rely on the recovery instructions provided by your board certified facial plastic surgeon.

Your sleeping position will not negatively impact your Voluma/Sculptra results. Keep in mind, it takes 1-2 weeks for final results with fillers and Sculptra results can take 3-6 months to see improvement. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your question.  Sleeping on one's side will not affect the results of your Sculptra or Voluma filler treatments.  Over the first few days of treatment the filler will incorporate themselves into your tissues preventing them from being moved.  Hope this helps.

Altering your sleep position is really hard. So, do your best to sleep on your back for the first few days following treatment, but if you slip to your side, don't worry. The Voluma won't "migrate".

I always advise my patients to not sleep on their Voluma and to sleep on their backs for 1-2 days.  I prefer to be overly cautious.  Always seek treatment from a qualified physician.

I too find it impossible to sleep on my back, even though my face probably wishes I did.  As far as Voluma and Sculptra post procedure care, it is all right to sleep however you are most comfortable.  Voluma doesn't migrate, and Sculptra should be dispensed evenly through the skin layer and massaged regularly the first week anyway.  Therefore, it is not a problem.

While the filler is very unlikely to migrate, I would be more cautious the first few days following filler and avoid any direct pressure onto the filled areas. After a few days there would be no risk of movement and sleeping in the manner you mentioned is fine. Again, I would not worry yourself regardless as movement is very unlikely, however if you are concerned that something has shifted I would advise following up with your doctor right away.

The first day after injections it would be a good idea to sleep on your back. However, sleeping on your face should not move the injections.  Sculptra takes several treatments for the collagen to be built up and sleeping on your face should have absolutely no interaction.  The results of Voluma are immediate and last a year and Sculptra takes several treatments and months to build up and lasts about two years.  For the best cosmetic results please consult an expert injector who is board certified.  Best, Dr. Green

Filler should not be altered with laying on them. It is impossible to control your body position during sleep and I wouldn't worry about this. Sculptra is going to take months to fully stimulate collagen and get it's final result. Expect to see Voluma's duration at about 1 year, and Sculptra to be 3-5 years.
