Do I need a lip lift?

I'm not sure whether or not I need a lip lift. I just read that the ideal Philtrum length is 10-13mm, and mine measures at 2 cm! :(. Please advise, since this is really upsetting - I'm now feeling insecure about having an abnormally long philtrum, when this is something I never even thought of before! Wish I never even learned the "ideal" proportions.

Measurements are just one factor that has to be taken into consideration. There are many other variables. Please do not get fixated on this facial feature. Cosmetic surgery is there to improve your quality of life. There is no question that a 1.5 cm philtrum is more attractive than a 2 cm philtrum, but one has to look at all the other elements of the face and make a decision base on the overall look of a person. For example if your upper lip is covering your teeth when your mouth is slightly open, you would have a stronger indication for a lip lift. I would suggest that you contact a qualified plastic surgeon who is specialized in lip surgery and get a consultation. you might be able to get an opinion by a video meeting and then decide if you want to be seen in person.

I would recommend scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person to determine whether a lip lift is appropriate for you. The length of the philtrum is just one aspect we look at when weighing the benefits of a lip lift. This procedure also increases upper teeth show when you smile and mucosal show of the upper lip. An experienced surgeon will be able to decide whether a lip lift is a good option for you, so try to ignore the “ideal” proportions you saw and focus on the recommendations of your doctor.

No offense Realself, but this is the kind of question that reinforces my fear that sites like Realself  harmfully perpetuate the myth of beauty "ideals" for profit sake.  You question is a perfect example.  You never worried about you philtral length until you saw the "ideal" measurement on Realself or other similar site.  So let me say this:. Your philtral length is perfect.  You are beautiful and you do not need a lip lift! "Ideal" facial measurements should be removed from all books and journals. They are irrelevant and harmful.  Love yourself!

noufie89I appreciate your concerns, however I would not be bothered by he theory of “ideal” aesthetic measurements, especially in the face.Sometimes plastic surgeons use these measurements as a guide when planning a particular procedure. However, some of the most beautiful and exotic faces that I have encountered over the years have been asymmetrical and unique with regard to the perception of “ideal features!”It appears from your photographs that the lower third of your face is most attractive and I would not be concerned with your philtrum distance! At most, you may consider conservative lip augmentation, if that distance truly bothers you. Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to explore the best options for you. Good luck.
