12 units of Botox injected in my mentalis. 8 days now and no change.

Question

I had botox injected on my forehead and chin.My concern is regarding my chin, he had this technique of putting a cross like in the chin and inserting 3 units in each dot.so a total of 12units of botox to remove my orange peel chin or masculin look. My previous injector another doctor only put 6 units 6 months ago and it worked wonders a week later now im suprised with this new doctor.And im starting to wonder maybe he didnt inject all the units he told me he did?or diluted botox for min effects?

Thank you for your question.  Hard to say because we were not present then but I treat the mentalis commonly in my practice and I like to use 4 injection sites, each getting 2,3 or 4 units (so total 8, 12 or 16 u) per treatment - this recipe is for Botox.There are 3 products on the market, Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and each has a slight different in the preparation and number of units required.Not many people know but these medications come to us, doctors, in a frozen powder and we reconstitute them with fluid.  So it is important to trust your clinic for the reconstitution ratio (hence if the cost per unit seems super low... as we say "if too good to be true...", think carefully)ALWAYS:1.  go to a reputable clinic 2.  make sure you meet the doctor for an assessment3.  go for your follow-up4.  Make sure you get the products and dose you are paying for, and do not hesitate to ask for the products to be prepared in front of you.Hope this helps.Dr. Marc DuPere, aesthetic plastic surgeon.

Thanks for your question. By 8 days, you should be seeing some results. It’s possible that the Botox wasn’t placed deep enough to get down to the mentalis muscle thus no changes in your appearance. I would recommend going back to your PS and have some additional Botox placed. Best wishes.

There are a few variables to consider but your best option is to follow up with your injector after 14 days for evaluation.  They may want to add a few more units to enhance your result. In our practice, 4-6 units is typically enough to treat the average chin, but every patient is different.

Thank you for your question swarovski. I understand your concern. Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. When injected into the skin Botox will relax the muscles and smoothen out the overlying wrinkles. The most common areas of treatment are in the upper face. These include the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when one raises the brows, the vertical lines seen between the brows when one frowns (frown lines), and the crow's feet seen around the eyes when one smiles.It is difficult to make an assessment in the absence of consistent photographs before and after in the same lighting and angles for comparison. However, I hope the information provided here is useful.While Botox is most commonly used in the upper face, it can also be used in various areas in the lower face. Botox can be placed in the mentalis muscle on the chin to address a cobblestone appearance or dimpling on the chin. In this area 2-8 units of Botox are used.The pivotal studies demonstrated that the peak results are seen 14 days after the treatment. While some people start to see results as early as the next day, it can take two weeks for full results so patience is important. We have our patients return two weeks after their treatment to assess their results via photographs. At that time additional units may be added if necessary.If I had a patient with the concerns described here I would recommend that she return to her provider two weeks after her treatment for an assessment and specific recommendations.With any injection, there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and infection. We take special precautions to minimize these risks such as using a painless technique. We also treat bruises with a laser as early as the next day. Bruises usually resolve within two weeks if untreated. After a laser treatment bruises usually resolve in 1-3 days, but may still take two weeks for full resolution. In addition to these risks, with Botox there is also a risk that the product spreads or diffuses to nearby structures. Spread to nearby muscles can lead to side effects such as the temporary appearance of droopy eyelids or a temporary asymmetric smile.After a Botox treatment, I recommend that my patients avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and not lie down flat for four hours. This is because all of these activities may possibly lead to the movement of the product and consequent side effects such as droopy eyelids. Although there have been no definitive studies shown that these actually occur and some physicians do not provide such aftercare instructions, in the absence of data I err on the side of caution and recommend that my patients avoid such activities.Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. It's difficult to determine why this time isn't working for you, and last time did. I would, however, wait full 2 weeks after injections to judge your final results. If you are not happy with your results, follow up with your injector. Good luck! I've seen results from chins from as little as 4 units. That being said, that is on the low end and some people require more units than that.
