Is this new discoloration above my lip after Juvederm a lingering bruise or melasma? (Photo)

I received 1/2 a syringe of Juvederm 3.5 weeks ago. My lips are still a bit sore at the injection sites. At first I thought the "mustache" above my lip was a bruise bc it seems I'm healing slowly, but at 3.5 weeks I'm skeptical. Surgeon assured me it was a shadow during a follow up in a poorly lit exam room, but it is still visible in direct overhead daylight and is very clearly discoloration of some kind. Could a bruise really last this long? What would cause this?

Hi Kitteh.  With the location and symmetry, it does not appear to be a bruise or the after effects of a bruise.  More likely to be Melasma.  We use hydroquinone (liquid gel at 8%) and stay away from laser treatments for Melasma as they can make it worse.

It's difficult to tell from your pictures, but bruising is typical. It can sometimes take a few weeks to resolve. Icing, ibuprofen and cold compresses can help reduce swelling and/or bruising. Hope this helps.

It's difficult to tell from your pictures. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. This may still be bruising. VBeam treatments can give improvement. However, Melasma needs a combination approach to get the best improvement and will need a series of treatments. In our practice, we combine Clear + brilliant, peels, microneedling/PRP, aerolase, Cosmelan, and sometimes erbium laser (coollaser) to get the best results. Thank you for your question. From your photos, this does not appear to be a bruise but more likely melisma. This can be treated with hydroquinone and it is advisable to stay away from laser treatments as they can make it worse. I recommend having a follow up with your treating physician for an evaluation.
