Why isn’t Juvederm Ultra Plus XC used for cheeks more often?

Question

Looking at before and after photos, I find Juvederm Ultra Plus XC more natural looking and softer in cheeks than Voluma, which I find a little harsh. Why don’t injectors use Ultra more often?

Juvederm can still be used in the cheeks. It is a more hydrophilic ("water loving") product, so it does create a "softer" look because it tends to draw in water. Voluma on the other hand does not draw in as much fluid, and thus creates a "tighter" lift, and the company claims that is a longer lasting result, hence the increased cost. In the hands of an experienced injector, both can have excellent results, but individual results vary.

The choice for filler is dependent on the patient.   There is no one answer for filler, or where it should be placed.   Ultra Plus doesn't last as long as Voluma and is often lost below the cheek muscle and fat pads, while Voluma has a higher G prime and provides much more lift.

For cheek volumization, filler must have sufficient cohesivity to provide some lift.  Both Voluma and Ultra Plus meet this criteria and can give beautiful results in the midface.  Voluma may be preferred in some cases as it is a  newer formulation and may provide longer lasting results.  If you have a personal preference for Ultra Plus, it is certainly an appropriate choice.  Adding volume to the cheeks is a great way to provide a subtle change to give the face a more youthful shape.Becky Hamilton, APRN at Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery

Juvederm Ultra Plus can be used in the cheek area but it doesn't give as much lift as Juvederm Voluma.  Voluma is much better and more natural than Juvederm Ultra Plus.  Perhaps you had too much Voluma injected if you feel that it was harsh.  Please consult an expert in cosmetic injections of Voluma for the best results. I do not recommend Ultra Plus in the mid face as it is too subtle to give results. You could request the product but would need to be fully informed it is not the recommended product for mid face filling. Voluma provides more lift and is also longer lasting.

Thank you for your message! Juvederm Ultra Plus can absolutely be placed into the cheeks, however our patient typically respond better to and like the longevity of Voluma. If you already have a good amount of facial volume, Juvederm Ultra Plus may not be thick enough to make a difference! If you prefer the Juvederm Ultra Plus, let your injector know!

Juvederm Ultra Plus XC can certainly be used in the cheeks to help contour the area.  The product selected is based on each patient's treatment goals.  Many patients prefer the look and longevity of Voluma vs. Ultra Plus.  If you prefer Ultra Plus, it is absolutely fine to use that product for cheek contouring.

The thinking is that HA fillers like Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma are able to provide more lift leading to a better result when treating the cheeks. Juvederm UltraPlus can still be used in the cheeks if that is what you prefer.
