Would I benefit from a rhinoplasty? Concerned about asymmetrical nose bridge. (photos)

Question

Is a rhinoplasty the correct procedure to create more balance and symmetry to my nose? My concern is the bone that’s sticking out of the bridge of my nose. It may seem minor, but it bothers me and I do not like the right side of my face (profile) because of it. I feel that my nose looks crooked because on that side. Otherwise, I am mostly content with how my nose looks - I think it’s the right size for my face. Would the bone need to be shaved down in order to achieve more symmetry? Thank you!

Thank you for your question. You are an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. I think it is one of the most beautifying surgeries that we do as plastic surgeons. A large portion of my practice is dedicated to rhinoplasty surgery. It is important to only see plastic surgeons with extensive experience in rhinoplasty, ie perform at least 6 per month and have performed hundreds of cases. Also, critically evaluate on-line galleries to see if their art form resonates with yours. Rhinoplasty is definitely a grey haired plastic surgeon's sport. Most plastic surgeons like to perform lip lift procedures at a separate time. Best wishes to you

Thank you for submitting your question and photos. During a rhinoplasty procedure, the nose can be reshaped to create balance with your other facial features.  To address the bump you’re referring to, nasal rasps can be used to file it down safely while preserving the rest of your nose structure.

Great question! Rhinoplasty is just a general term used for any procedure that changes the appearance of the nose. This could mean changes in size, shape, symmetry, rotation or projection. It could certainly correct any concerns you have shown in your photos. Whether it would benefit you is determined through a thorough history and exam and discussion with a rhinoplasty specialist. You are definitely a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Bear in mind that often asymmetry may be improved but not completely perfect.  The quality of your result depends largely on the surgeon who you choose. So I recommend a few consults until you find the surgeon you feel is right for you

I think that if you are comfortable with the appearance of your nose and can identify a few areas that you would like modified and rhinoplasty can help with these issues, then you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.  During your consultation with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon you will be able to view computer generated images that can demonstrate to you changes that you might like to see to the appearance of your nose.  Then you can decide what images look best.

The bump on your nose can be addressed both nonsurgically with fillers or surgically with rhinoplasty.  Nonsurgical rhinoplasty involves masking the hump by placing filler above and below the bump to create a smoother transition.  Based on your photos, your nose may be slightly large for your face, and I would not recommend further increasing the size with filler.  Reducing a bump on the bridge of your nose is one of the most common reasons that patients pursue rhinoplasty.  A full assessment of the nose would be needed to determine if anything further needed to be done to make sure the new nose balances with the rest of the face.  I would recommend consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty.

A nose should fit your facial features, skin tone, ethnicity, and even height, and a good plastic surgeon will work with you to arrive at the optimally harmonious look. Many surgeons have a favorite “style”: the ski jump, the pug, the narrow bridge, etc. It is important to find a plastic surgeon who understands your goals and does not have a “cookie-cutter” approach. It is difficult to say without examining you, but it is possible to smooth the contour of the bridge of the nose. I perform rhinoplasty using a closed approach where the bone is recontoured and there are no scars on the outside of your nose. This procedure can be performed as an outpatient. Be sure to have the surgery in a fully-accredited operating room with a board-certified anesthesiologist. I suggest making an appointment with a fully trained plastic surgeon for consultation to discuss your options.
