Is it normal for one side on my lip to look bigger after lip augmentation? (Photo)

I just got my top lip done yesterday .5cc to be exact. I wanted something natural. I noticed while getting the injections that it bled more on the side that is bigger. I know the next day is the “duck lips” but I’m nervous because it hurts to move the side that is smaller. And is it normal for the smaller side to feel hard and hurt?

Thank you for your photos. Swelling right after lip augmentation is very common, and this can give the appearance of "duck lips," asymmetry or both. You should see improvement over the next few days, and then see your final results develop over the next week or two. Cold compresses can help the swelling and should also help with any tenderness.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question and photographs.  It is not uncommon to have some stiffness and discomfort in the first day or so after lip filler treatment.  While a mild asymmetry is common with injections it sounds as if you may have had some increased bleeding causing yours.  This will resolve as your results mature over the next 2+ weeks.  Hang in there!

Yes, this can be typical following lip fillers. It can take 1-2 weeks for final results. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

dhuff1990.   It take at least one week for all swelling and bruising to resolve after lip augmentation injections. The swelling may cause the appearance of asymmetry, but it should resolve when swelling goes down.  If not, see your doctor. Good luck!

Lip asymmetry is an issue that can arise in the first few days after the lips undergo injection. Usually, the swelling goes away and there is no problem. However, sometimes asymmetry does occur and you may need a touch up. Stay in touch with your surgeon and follow up after about two weeks if you notice any asymmetry. Good luck!

It is certainly possible to have asymmetric swelling even though the same amount may have been injected on each side.  Speak with your physician if you have concerns.  Cold compresses, arnica and bromelain may speed the resolution of the swelling, but in general, I agree with my colleagues that you should reserve judgement for a few weeks.  Rest assured that any asymmetries can usually be touched up with a minor revision.

Dear dhuff1990,dermal fillers have significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

You need to wait 2 weeks for any swelling and bruising to resolve in order to get a better picture of what your lips look like. Likely you have some normal swelling and possible a bruise based on your description. Please follow up with your treating physician to correct any asymmetry in 2 weeks.

Thank you for your question and for sharing your photographs.  Swelling is normal after treatment with filler, especially when the lips are injected.  Swelling can often cause the appearance of asymmetry or unwanted fullness.  I recommend that my patients ice the area for up to 48 hours after the procedure.  Arnica is also helpful for minimizing normal postprocedure swelling.  Please keep in mind that it will take 2 weeks to allow normal postprocedure swelling to fully resolve and to see your final result.  If you continue to have concerns, please be sure to see your injector for an in-person reevaluation in order to determine the best course of action.  Hope this helps and best wishes!
