Does massage or other actions help implants drop? 3 months post-op.

You are still fairly early in your post-op course. It may take 6 months or longer to see final breast implant settling. If you don't have any problems with contracture, you may see both implants settle into similar positions. Options can include continuing to massage in a downward manner on the right side, and/or placement of a garment/band applying gentle pressure to the top of the right implant to help it move down. Your plastic surgeon should be able to evaluate this and offer personalized recommendations.

Dear teacup52,Dropping of implants is part of the healing process and this occurs after the tissues surrounding the implants slowly relax, allowing the implants to settle into their final position. It can take about four to six months for the implant to drop down to their final position. Some surgeons recommend massaging of breasts some don't. I understand that you are worried about your implants are not dropping as expected. However, you are still in the early phase of the recovery period. Please do allow some time for the healing process to occur. If after six months, you are not satisfied with the appearance of your breast, you can visit your plastic surgeon and discuss your concerns.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

Thank you for your question. Every surgeon will have his/her own preferences as to recovery for specific procedures. Best is to follow your specific surgeon's advice.  It is not always recommended or necessary to massage, but most employ this method to encourage this as well as to keep the implant pocket soft. 

Thank you for your recent question.  Massage can help in some cases to bring the implant down and even out between the two breasts. I would recommend being seen by your PS to have him/her help you with the proper technique.  Best of luck!

Hello!Massage may help. Placing a band across the upper chest may help. You can certainly work on it, and your surgeon will be happy to provide you guidelines. You are still fairly early postop, so you can help shape your outcome at this point.

Dear Teacups,    Front and side view of your before and after pictures would have been helpful. There is always some difference between the breasts after breasts augmentation surgery, however,  not to the point of being lopsided, especially, not  after 3 months.    Implants displacement massage is definitely helpful in helping the implants to settle down and I instruct all my breasts augmentations patients to do it. So, if you did not do the implants displacement massage, it is probably a good idea for you to do it for the next 2-3 months.   If things do not improve after that period of time, most likely you have capsule contracture , which will require either capsulotomy (scar release) or capsulectomy (scar excision) with implant replacement due to 'Biofilm'.  Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly, check the before and after pictures of redo breasts augmentation in the photo gallery, to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive with nice cleavage, perky, symmetrical and natural looking.                                 Best of luck,                                                       Dr Widder

It is normal to have some asymmetry in the implant position early in the recovery. Although I can not say for sure that massage and displacement of the implants help the process, it definitely does not hurt things. Focus your efforts only on the higher implant. And give it time. Best wishes. 

I use massage to keep the pocket open.  It may help with the implants dropping a bit, but usually time is the key factor.

A woman's breast are never totally symmetric and It is not uncommon for there to be a difference between left and right in the "settling" of the implants after breast augmentation. I am not sure that the exercises will make a difference but as they are a simple thechnique that might help, I agree that continuing them is a reasonable idea. Six months is the time period to wait to see if time and gravity will produce the symmetric result you are looking for.

Thank you for your question. While it is starting to get later in your recovery period there is still some likelihood that the implants may drop. Continue to do your exercises and think about applying differential pressure to one side versus the other. I do this by having my patients place a towel under the bandeau on the side that is sitting higher. Also follow up soon with your plastic surgeon while the implants may have been soft there is still the chance of a capsule.
