Can I get a consultation while still breastfeeding?

The breasts can change shape and size significantly after you have stopped breast feeding completely.  To get the most out of your consultation, and an accurate idea of what would need to be done surgically to give you well-shaped, perky breasts again, it would be best to wait 3 months after you have stopped breast feeding to go to a consultation. Most (All) surgeons recommend that a woman wait until she is done breast feeding before undergoing aesthetic breast surgery (augmentation, lift, etc). However, many women want to "get the ball rolling" as they wean their child off of the breast. I think it is reasonable to have a consult and get an opinion about surgical options as long as the woman understands that things may change a bit, especially implant sizing, once the breast lobules shrink back to baseline once milk is no longer produced.

You can certainly get a consultation, however, you should not have surgery until well after your milk had stopped. Hormones can still influence breast size and milk can cause infection.An exam and consultation with a plastic surgeon is recommended to discuss your options and expectations.

I think its a completely reasonable plan to start having consultations at this point so you can weigh your options for surgery. I would definitely wait until at least 6 months after the milk supply has stopped before proceeding with surgery, and at that time I would have the surgeon you choose quickly reassesses you to make sure that there haven't been any significant changes that would modify the plan. I would recommend having consultation for breast augmentation no sooner than six months after you have completely finished breastfeeding. This would give your breasts time to normalize and reach their final size and shape. At that point, your surgeon will be able to measure you more accurately. You can have a consultation for a breast Augmentation to learn about the procedure but a more detailed examination would need to be done after you have finished breast feeding and stopped lactating for two months. Although the changes may be minor after you stop breast feeding, you would want  to be able to evaluate the breast anatomy most  accurately when it is stable. Also you want to wait two months after lactation ends to have the procedure to lessen any risks of the Breast Augmentation Surgery itself. A detailed consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon would be recommended.

While it isn't ideal to have a consultation for breast augmentation while nursing, we still offer them as many patients just want the information to prepare for the augmentation surgery once they have stopped nursing.  We will even give a recommendation for implant size, but warn the patient that size and shape may change once they arrive for their preoperative visit.  We know that mothers need to have all their "ducks in a row" prior to any surgery, and we look ahead several months after nursing is done for a surgery date to let the breasts settle even more.  

 You can certainly have the consultation anytime. I think that most surgeons will make you wait at least 3-6 months after breast-feeding to be sure your breast are back to baseline. During the consultation you should learn all about implants and options available to you and work to figure out what size and shape of implant will give you the look you're going for. I would stop breast feeding and allow the glands to involute a bit. Then I would consider a consult. It may make a difference.
