Two weeks after my procedure I started having fluid leak from behind my ear down my neck whenever I ate. Surgeon said may have nicked a salivary gland during surgery. This resolved in 3 days, but for the last two weeks I have had a pocket of fluid behind my ear that gets increasingly larger whenever i eat. No pain, just pressure. Saw my surgeon again yesterday and he said he didn't want to drain it for fear of introducing bacteria. Will this heal itself or did it need to be repaired?

Answer: Salivary build up after a facelift Salivary build up underneath the skin after a facelift can be a rare complication. One of the major salivary glands, the parotid gland, is in the area that is operated on during the facelift. If the gland is injured in saliva can leak underneath the skin. While this can be a frustrating complication for the patient, it will resolve over time. There are multiple treatments that can help resolve the collection of saliva underneath the skin. These treatments include:1) pressure dressing2) Botox injections3) oral medicationsRepeated drainage of the saliva is not recommended. If you are my patient, I would put you on all three mentioned above treatments.I hope this helps.

Answer: Sialocoele Saliva build up after a facelift results from damage to the parotid gland. While these generally will heal with time, there are medications that help dry up secretions that can help speed up the process. Unfortunately they also cause dry mouth, dry eyes, etc. Botox can also be used into the parotid. Check with your surgeon regarding these options. Best of luck. Be patient.
