Can Diastasis recti be repaired as part of a mommy makeover? If so, is a regular tummy tuck or extended tummy tuck best?

Repair of rectus separation is a routine component of a tummy tuck / abdominoplasty if it is present. By repairing the gap we are able to improve the resting position of the muscles, which often leads to an improvement in both your waist line and any protrusion you may currently have. However, it is difficult to decide what procedure is best for you without photos. In terms of regular or extended, unfortunately I cannot give you a specific answer without seeing photos. A mommy makeover is one or more procedures that restore a woman’s body after having children, and these procedures are customized based on the individual patient. Therefore, if diastasis recti is an issue for you, then repair can be performed during your mommy makeover. A full tummy tuck would target the area above your belly button, where your previous surgery was unable to target.

Abdominoplasty is usually performed as part of the mommy make over. This will include repair of the diastasis recti. 
An extended tummy tuck involves extending the incision further to the sides, allowing tightening of loose flank skin, if present. A beltectomy extends completely circumferentially around the trunk, also lifting lateral thighs and buttocks. One procedure is no better than the other....they accomplish different things.

Diastasis is repaired during an abdominoplasty procedure (aka tummy tuck.) That is one of the key components to assist in giving your abdomen that flat appearance that is highly desired after bearing children. The amount of excess skin you have in the flank/hip region is what is used to determine if you will need the extended tummy tuck or not. I would recommend speaking to a board certified plastic surgeon to determine what is best for you based on your current shape.

As to if you would need a mini or a full, this would depend on what your body looks like and the severity of the diastasis. The short answer to your question, is yes , it can. A number of names have been developed to describe forms of abdominoplasty, including mini tuck ,extended tuck, regular tuck etc. The terms mean different things to different surgeons,andbecome confusing. When considering what procedure is best for a given patient, the various components of the abdominal wall must be considered. If there is a diastasis present , or the wall is very lax, a repair will be needed to achieve a flat abdomen. Excess deep fat is typically removed with liposuction as part of the procedure. Excess or loose hanging skin must be excised, and the lenghth of the incision is determined by how much skin is removed. In my opinion, few patients are really good candidates for a mini tuck, particularly if they have had children.
