When can I start corset training after a tummy tuck? (photo)

Question

My dream is to achieve a small waist so I thought that after my up coming TT I should start corset training. I was planing on wearing my corset on top of my compression garment but I am afraid that I might hurt myself. Attached are pics of the corset I am planning to buy but I want an opinion first before I dish out almost $200 for something that I might not use. Help please

You should follow your own surgeon's instructions. My guess is that you could start two weeks after surgery. Interestingly I will sometimes have my patients wear a corset for a couple weeks BEFORE surgery as it will help to compress the abdomen and make it easier to tighten at the time of surgery. Again, check with your surgeon if you think this would be good for you.

Thanks for your question. Do be sure that you connect with your surgeon. After a tummy tuck the blood supply to the abdominal skin is changed. Too much pressure on the newly moved skin can cause tissue loss and healing complications. While it is common to wear a gently compressive binder your corset may be too tight initially until the skin has had time to heal and establish new blood supply. Your surgeon will guide you when he or she thinks the time is correct.Best wishes

You can wear a corset up to the time of your tummy tuck, but wearing it afterward will depend on how you're healing.  You do not want to impede blood flow which could compromise wound healing.  Your surgeon will be able to advise you on when you can begin wearing a corset post operatively based on how you are progressing through recovery.

It is very important that you question your surgeon about this. The timing in starting to wear a corset will depend on how confident they are with the circulation to the our abdominal skin.  Corset training can have rewarding results but you do not want to risk compromising the healing of your tummy tuck by wearing it too soon.Dr. Hargrave

Actually the tummy tuck will not give you the narrow waist you wish to have alone. The corset training is an excellent idea and it might help to begin using it before tummy tuck, and we would suggest getting back to it four weeks after your procedure. Let us know how it works out.
