I have under eye bags and was wondering if I got a cheek filler like voluma put in, would it help? (Photo)

Thank you for your question and sharing your concern.  I would recommend visiting with a board certified plastic surgeon who can discuss a lower eyelid procedure where the skin and muscle is tightened and the fat redistributed.  It would a more impactful way of addressing your concern than a cheek implant.

Hi Kimali,Before Voluma was FDA approved in the US, patients requesting lower eyelid filler treatment received Restylane.  Now we treat the cheeks with Voluma first, if there is still lower eyelid hollowing then a much less amount of Restylane is used.  That is a long way of saying Yes, Voluma can help with hollowness under the eyes, even without directly injecting the lower eye area.  Make sure that you choose your injecting physician most carefully based on their skill, experience, knowledge, and natural artistic vision.  Good luck and be well.Dr. P 

We can't see your full cheeks in the picture, but from what we can see you would probably benefit from Voluma to the cheeks. Although Voluma in the cheeks will help improve the appearance of the area under the eyes, the improvement will be minimal and you will probably still need additional filler under the eyes to help camouflage the bags. Find an experienced injector that can do both for you at the same time. Best of luck.

Voluma is an excellent alternative to currently used fillers. We use it for restoring mid face volume in the cheek that had previously been difficult to enhance. We have seen great results lasting 12 months and more. I would suggest you discuss your concern regarding your prior treatment with a dermatologist that has experience with Voluma. We do use it with other fillers used in different areas. We do not use under eyes nor do we recommend this so your concerns should be checked out by a doctor.

Thank you for submitting a photo with your question.  The under eye bags that you see are becoming more prominent because the fat in your cheeks has diminished.  Plumping up your cheeks again will help to hide the bags.  This works for most people.  Occasionally, someone does have a very prominent fat pad under the eye which would be better served with surgery, but from your photos I think a filler is a good option for you at this point.  Good luck!

Hello.  This is a hot topic, as you can see by all the answers.  First, let me say that I find it admirable and I must show respect for the dermatologist who said they don't place fillers in this area.  This is an area with complicated anatomy, that only someone with the surgical knowledge of anatomy should deal with, so bravo for that doctor.  You should stick with them for whatever else you're seeing them for.Regarding your tear trough, although it is off-label (not FDA approved), yes, fillers can be placed in this area, very cautiously, be an experienced surgeon.  Not everyone does this.  Alternatively, you can have a lower lid blepharoplasty to try to blend this junction, in order to obliterate the "valley".   I hope you found this helpful.

Depending on one's anatomy, often adding a bit of volume to the cheek can make the tear trough look better--and possibly decrease the amount of filler needed to camouflage the tear trough.  Your dermatologist has the benefit of examining you and looking and feeling your facial anatomy, while your photo offers limited information.  Seek out another opinion from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who performs cosmetic injections frequently if you'd like, but the advice you've received sounds reasonable.  Good luck!

Part of the reason that you have under eye bags is due to loss of volume both under the eye and on the top of the cheek. If you feel your cheek the area over the bone beneath your eye is part of your cheek. If that area is expertly filled with Voluma then your tear trough or eye bag will either be partially treated or possibly fully treated.However, in my experience the best result comes from a combination of filling the cheek and filling the tear trough ( area closer to the eye than the bone). Voluma is too thick to put in the delicate area under the eye. Many doctors don't perform injection under the eyes because it is very difficult and results in a higher complication rate than over areas. There are only 2 filers in the US that should be used in that area: Restylane and Belotero. Treating the cheek first will result in a more natural result. You could either try that first and see how it is or find a doctor that can do both at the same time.

Voluma can provide lifting of the surrounding tissues that support the lower eyelid tissue.  Typically, your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will start with the lateral part of your cheek (closest to the ear) and then work medial (toward the outside corner of your eyelid).  Although it is not intuitive, this method provides lift to the lateral corner of the eyelid and decreases the "tired" appearance of your lower eyelids. Best,Suneel Chilukuri, M.D.

Many patients develop bags under their eyes because they are actually losing fat in their cheeks. What happens is that we tend to see the fullness under our eyes (eyelid fat) but not realize that that eyelid fat is not changing as much the fact that the fat just a little lower on your face (cheek fat) reducing with time.  When that happens the eyelid fat seems more prominent because valley is forming on the cheek making the eyelid fat more visible.  In those circumstances a Voluma treatment is very helpful.I would suggest seeing a good cosmetic physician in your area who is experienced in treating the area under the eyes.
