Hi, I'm 20 years old and have been wanting breast surgery for larger breasts since I was at least 13, I've recently been diagnosed with mild autoimmune hepatitis, I take 10mg of prednisone daily. I was wondering if this disease has now ruined my chance of getting breast augmentation as it's something I've been wanting and saving for, for a very long time. I would really like to know if it's safe or if it would make my autoimmune disease worse?
Answer: Breast augmentation Dear carly1211,as long as you get a clearance from your doctor, you might be a candidate for breast augmentation. There have been numerous studies on the safety and efficacy of silicone breast implants. The FDA has approved them to be safe and breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United States every year. Implants are much different than they used to be with rigorous testing and cohesive gel. I can't tell you how happy my breast augmentation patients have been with their implants. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.Daniel Barrett, MD Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Answer: Breast implant and mild hepatitis? Breast implant and mild hepatitis?I appreciate your question and your concerns for your liver! I do not believe that you have anything to worry about with regards to breast implants and potential negative side effects on your liver. However, when you present yourself to the plastic surgeon be sure that you carefully discuss all of your medical issues. It also might be a good idea if your specialist assisting you with your liver issues can you evaluate you before you have any surgery.Good luck! Dr. Aldo

Answer: Considering BA This requires a conversation between your plastic surgeon and medical doctor. They need to discuss the safety of performing an elective procedure such as BA against the risks posed by your autoimmune hepatitis.

Answer: There is no reason that a BA will affect your mild autoimmune disease There is no reason that a BA should affect your autoimmune disease. you may have delayed wound healing due to your steroids (prednisone). You should, of course, let your surgeon know your meds. however there is no reason not to proceed with surgery. you should, of course, let your doctor, who follows your liver disease know that you are going to have a BA, so that they can offer any special advice or perhaps may want some blood tests before you have your surgery.david berman md
