Can Voluma really be dissolved?

Question

I had Voluma in cheeks over a 1.5 months which for some reason is still causing swelling in the malar area worse in the morning and better in the evenings. I have had several rounds of hyurolonidase but still have the problem. Has any doctor actually seen this in any patient and can the voluma really all be dissolved or am I wasting my time? Also, I am praying that it doesn't last the full 2 years and that when it does all dissolve that the swelling will resolve as well. Any advice appreciated.

Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear about your unhappiness with your most recent filler injection. It is safe to dissolve with a Hyalauronidase. It was originally thought that a higher concentration of dissolver is needed for Voluma compared to other HA fillers. This has not been found to be true in clinical practice. It may require several treatments before you achieve your desired results however. Please follow up with your injector so he/she may evaluate you and take the necessary steps improve it. Hyaluronidase does work extremely well. You can then start again to create the look you are wishing. This is a major benefit of temporary fillers. Sometimes with new patients to our clinic we dissolve everything and start over.

This is the beauty of HA fillers. They can successfully and quickly be reversed
with Hylenex or a different Hyaluronidase.

Hi there, sorry you are experiencing this problem with Voluma. Voluma can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. However, since it is usually placed in a deep plane (right over the bone), it can be difficult to effectively deliver hyaluronidase to the necessary area.  Several treatments may be necessary.

Thank you for your question. Hyaluronidase is used successfully to dissolve Voluma. Some patients need a longer and more frequent treatment of hyaluronidase to dissolve Voluma because each Voluma treatment varies with the needs, desires and health of each patient. I'm sorry you went through this situation. Some forms of hyaluronidase work better than others. Perhaps using recombinant Hylenex might do a better job. The product ay have dissolved, but swelling from injection trauma and some tissue reactions may be causing your new symptoms. Some patients get an MRI to get some piece of mind, but I'm not sure you want to get that expensive of a work up since things will get better over time.

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your dissolving issues.  Voluma can be successfully dissolved, but due to its cross-linked nature it often requires a series of treatments and at higher doses than other hyaluronic acid fillers.  Talk to your surgeon, they should be adjusting your reversal plan based on your results.  Best wishes.

Thank you for your question. For most patients it can take a series of hyaluronidase treatments to have complete removal of Voluma. However, you had only a little placed into cheek and a single round of hyaluronidase may be enough to dissolve your filler.

This is a great question!  Voluma, like all other hyaluronic acid fillers, can be dissolved with a medication called hyaluronidase.  Because Voluma is a denser, more stabilized hyaluronic acid product, it sometimes requires more than one session to dissolve it fully.  I would recommend that you schedule a consultation with an experienced, board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your treatment options.
