How much difference can an alar base reduction do? (Photo)

Alar base reductions are generally pretty subtle if less than 3 mm is reduced. Various techniques exist, depending on whether width or flare is most important to reduce. Some techniques can reduce 8-10mm, which is often excessive. I find the magic number to be in the 5-7 range if dramatic changes are needed.

With good surgical technique, you could have an outstanding result. The photo you included is an illustration, so keep in mind that it's easy to draw a result but more challenging to achieve it on a person. Most of the difference occurs close to the cheek, and not quite so much at the rest of the rim. People with a nose that looks like that in the illustration don't generally need this procedure anyway. Consider what the effect would be on a really wide nose which is more likely to make a patient want the procedure.

An alar base reduction can treat flare and/or width depending upon the way the incisions are designed. There are limitations to how wide of an excision can be performed. Best of luck.

Thank you for your question.To have an idea on what you will need it would be easier if you posted a picture of your alar base area. Having said that though, an alarplasty is an effective method for reducing the size of the alar base as well as that of the nostril circumference, if indicated.If you are doubtful about what your surgeon is telling you, then maybe the sensible thing to do is to have another consultation with a different board certified Plastic Surgeon.Kind regards.
