Round nose tip and nostrils, is it possible to reshape it? (Photos)

Question

I'm not happy with how round my nose and nostrils are, and I'd like to have a sharper and more defined nose. I also wish it was more narrow. It looks very wide especially when I'm smiling. Is it possible to reshape the tip of my nose with surgery and make it smaller, sharper and narrow? The shortness of my nose is also something that really bothers me. Is there anything that could be done to make it slightly longer?

The round bulbous tip can be improved significantly with her rhinoplasty.  The overall length of the nose can also be made to appear longer with cartilaginous grafts.  However, the shape of the nostrils is very difficult to change.  RegardsDr. J

Thank you for your question.  Simply put, a nose can be surgically reshaped assuming the patient is healthy, has reasonable expectations, and has anatomy favorable for a surgical procedure.  The critical thing for the patient is seeking out an experienced Rhinoplasty Surgeon. Seeing photos is not sufficient to give you a complete answer, so I would recommend that you seek out a few in-person opinions.

photograph, you may benefit from a tip refining rhinoplasty. Your surgeon can
accomplish this by trimming, suturing, and reshaping the cartilage in your
lower nose.   Make sure you specifically look at before and after
pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon
and not just a computer animation system. The most important
aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek
consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate
you in person.

Your nasal tip is broad due to underlying cartilages that are wide and somewhat splayed.  By reducing their size and suturing them to manipulate their shape, you can obtain a sharper more refined nasal tip.  It is hard to visualize your nasal length without a lateral view.

Thank you for your question.  Many people are concerned with the appearance of their nose.  Your wish to have a more refined tip with narrowing is a common concern for patients undergoing nose reshaping or rhinoplasty.  From the photos you have submitted it appears that the tip is too wide or boxy.  In those instances the tip cartilage can be reduced and reshaped with sutures to create a more triangular rather than square appearance to the tip which in turn makes the tip look more narrow and refined.  The other concern with the nose not being long enough may be addressed by making the tip more narrow, so that would only be addressed after making the first change.  Consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon should be your first step.  You should make sure they can show you many different rhinoplasty before and after cases that they have done.  Additionally, they should be able to perform 3D imaging to help you visualize the possible outcomes before having surgery.  We use the VECTRA 3D imaging system which helps you see yourself in 3 dimensions both before surgery and possible outcomes after surgery.

Every nose is
different and unique to that individual. If the appearance of your nose
concerns you enough to do something about it, it can be improved with a natural
artistically performed rhinoplasty. What would be the best option and exact
procedure would depend on an in person examination (not just an online
consultation) and discussion about desired outcome. Excellent results can
be achieved with either a closed or open technique.
Keep in mind that following advice from a surgeon on this or any other website
who proposes to tell you exactly what to do and how technically to do
it based on two dimensional photos without examining you, physically
feeling your tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical
history and discussing the pros and cons of the operative procedure would not
be in your best interest. Natural appearing results need to be individualized
and what is appropriate for one patient is not necessarily the best for someone
else. I would suggest that you find a surgeon with extensive rhinoplasty
experience certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and one who is
ideally a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that
surgeon in person.
