Is cheek filler safe?

The cheek fillers used by board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons have been proven to be extremely safe and effective. There are two main types of fillers that are commonly used to enhance the cheek area: hyaluronic acid fillers and collagen stimulating fillers. Fillers such as Juvaderm, Voluma, Perlane, Restylane and Belotero are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced by our own bodies that contributes to the skin’s fullness and elasticity. Radiesse and Sculptra both stimulate the body’s natural collagen production which may provide longer lasting results. While there are risks involved with any medical procedure, the risks are greatly reduced when patients undergo a cheek filler treatment from a trained and experienced medical professional.

The hyaluronic gel fillers - like Juvederm - have an excellent track record, and a low incidence of adverse effects.  In the hands of a skilled injector, you should get a nice improvement.  The rules on whether nurses can inject vary from location to location.  Check with your local health authorities on this one.Voluma is the current "hot" product for cheek filling.

There are a variety of fillers and volumizers for the cheeks including Juvederm Voluma, radiesse and sculptra. The key is to have someone experienced with the anatomy of the cheek area. There are vital nerves and blood vessels in that area that the injector needs to be familiar with. Injection into these vessels could be devastating. 

Juvederm Voluma is the most popular filler today that is being used for cheek enhancement. It can last up to 2 years. Voluma injection is extremely safe provided that it is being done by a properly trained individual who has experience in treating the cheeks. I recommend you have a physician (preferably a board certified surgeon) perform your injections.

There's a great new (to us in the US) filler in the Juvéderm family of fillers. It's called Juvéderm Voluma. It has a very good safety record of use in Europe and Canada for many years prior to its arrival in the US in late 2013. Juvéderm Voluma is specifically indicated for augmenting, shaping and lifting the cheek. It has a tremendous lifting capacity and has been show to result in a satisfying result even 2 years after a full correction. I would recommend having a physician who is very experienced in aesthetic injections do your treatment for you. A physician knows and understands anatomy the best.  

Juvederm and the related hyaluronic acid fillers overall have an excellent safety profile. As with any procedure complications can occur and you should discuss these with your physician. The most common problems arise from injector error (e.g. placing the filler in the wrong tissue plane or even injecting into blood vessels or other vital structures). In experienced hands, filler in the cheeks is very safe. If there is great concern, the injector can stay away from the portion of the cheek next to the nose. Juvederm, or any other hyaluronic acid filler (Restylane, Belotero, Perlane), is a great option because it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Make sure the injector has access to hyaluronidase in the office.

Juvederm type fillers have an excellent safety profile.With that said they need to be carefully injected in the right spot and the proper amount to optimize improvement and minimize complications .I love nurses but if it were me or my family member the only one I would let inject me would be a board certified,experienced plastic surgeon or dermatologist .
