I have never asked any patient to avoid coffee after surgery. Not sure what the concern would be. Low salt diet is to help you not become swollen and retain fluids. In my practice, any restrictions for diet or medications is two weeks before and two weeks after.
I do a LOT of tummy tucks in my practice and while I suggest to patients that they monitor their salt intake postoperatively, I don't see any reason to avoid coffee. The concern must be about the caffeine content of coffee causing blood vessels to constrict and perhaps delaying wound healing. At least, that is what I would guess. As far as I know, there is no evidence that a cup of coffee is going to cause such a problem. Also, as far as sodium, it is clear that a very high dose of salt (e.g. Chinese food) will probably make you swell and become uncomfortable. Swelling after this type of meal seems to go on for a couple of days.Basically, in my practice, most dietary habits IN MODERATION are probably fine.
There should be no dietary restrictions after an abdominoplasty. A healthy diet and establishing a healthy life style are most important.
Why NOT ask your chosen surgeon these post operative protocol issues??? We do not know your medical surgical history, so why would we recommend you doing something without checking with your surgeon first!!!!
Those are pretty specific restrictions and it would be in your best interest to seek guidance on specifics from your individual surgeon. I know that when I ask patients to do very specific things, there are usually specific reasons for it and I would always appreciate the opportunity to help guide their postop care.Best,Dr. Pyle
