Is 50 a little too old for breast implants?

Many women in their 50's and 60's are coming in for breast augmentation. It is a safe procedure that can really enhance the quality of life for women at any age. Implants may be placed over the muscle in order to achieve more of a breast lift. It is important to make sure that there is enough breast thickness to camouflage the implant if placed above the muscle. Rippling and edge visibility may be a problem if there is not enough breast tissue and fat to pad the implant.

There is no absolute contraindication to breast augmentation associated with age alone. As long as you are healthy, you should tolerate the surgery well. It is best to reach a healthy stable weight prior to surgery preferably with a BMI < 30 (thus I would recommend delaying until your weight has stabilized).As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

50 is DEFINITELY not too old for breast implants.  I have performed breast augmentations on many many women in their 50's.  Believe it or not - I recently performed a breast augmentation on a woman who is 80.  She has been happily married for 60 years to the same wonderful man.  She is like the grandmother you always wanted.  Her husband loves her the way she is.  But this fabulous, spunky great grandmother had always wanted larger breasts.  So I did a breast augmentation on her.  And mind you we used very small implants.  So if anyone is too old this patient is the one.  But she is thrilled 6 months out - and did great!  So as far as I am concerned age is just a number!~

Thank you for sharing your question.  Assuming the desire is there and you are otherwise a healthy enough patient to undergo surgery there should not be any reason that you can not have implants placed.  Hope this helps.

best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation.  The size, profile, and shape of
the implant is based on your desired breast size/shape, your chest wall
measurements, and soft tissue quality.  This decision should
be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you
and your surgeon.   Make sure you specifically look
at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery
performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.   The most
important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend
that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who
can evaluate you in person.

Thank you for your questions. Relatively healthy 50 year olds do very well after elective surgery. A subglanndular augmenation is a straightforward procedure and you should do extremely well and recover quickly. A surgeon would need to examine you after your planned weight loss to make sure you are stil a good candidate for this procedure. Good luck!

There is no age limit regarding breast augmentation. The safety of the surgery would depend on your skin elasticity and the skill and technique of your surgeon. At your age, a lift may be necessary to give you the optimal results, but this will, of course, depend on your desired result and your natural shape.
