I understand OHIP never covered breast augmentations before, but now that sex reassignment surgery is covered in thought it might have changed. After breastfeeding 2 children I'm now a 34 AA which I don't fit in fully. With two small kids to raise I definitely do not have the money to put out $8000. I'd like to wake up and feel like a woman again, but can't afford it.

Answer: Does OHIP now cover breast implants? Unfortunately not. Although breast implants can be used for reconstructive procedures like reconstruction after mastectomy and gender reassignment, implants for breast augmentation is considered cosmetic and therefore will not be covered.

Answer: Insurance Coverage for Cosmetic Surgery: Information Dear Ms. Kp362436, Thank you for your story and questions.I appreciate how you feel and the difficulties you have had. Unfortunately without seeing nude photos or being abel to examine you it is difficult to comment on you specifically, however hopefully you will find the following information helpful. If I understand your question (rephrased: "will health insurance cover the costs to enhance my breasts after pregnancy"). I have copied directly from the Am. Medical Association:(1) Our AMA supports the following definitions of "cosmetic" and "reconstructive" surgery: Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.(2) Our AMA encourages third party payers to use these definitions in determining services eligible for coverage under the plans they offer or administer.(CMS Rep. F, A-89; Reaffirmed: Sunset Report, A-00; Reaffirmed, A-03; Reaffirmed: CMS Rep. 4, A-13). In my experience, unfortunately insurance companies will not cover breast enhancement without a deformity. However it is always worthwhile to try. Please make a appointment with a experienced Plastic Surgeon who is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (denoting by membership as having met additional criteria and a focus on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery). My best wishes, R. A. Hardesty, MD, FACSDiplomate and Certified by the Am.
