This is a fairly common area of wound breakdown. Usually, the best approach is the one your Doctor is bringing you through. It could easily take from 3 to 6 weeks or even longer for it to heal naturally. Attempting to close it will often lead to infection and repeat breakdown. Just keep in touch with your Doctor along the way to make sure things are going as he expects.

Wound breakdown or separation after surgery is not uncommon.  Please keep in close contact with your surgeon and follow his/her instructions, you do not want this to become infected.

Unfortunately wound breakdown during the healing phase of surgery is one of the potential risks of undergoing the procedure. It will be very important for you to stay in close contact with your plastic surgeon to make sure that the opening does not continue to enlarge and does not become infected. Normally open wounds such as this can be treated with careful daily dressing changes. If the wound is kept clean and is not allowed to enlarge it should heal from the inside out. As mentioned however it will be very important for your surgeon to closely monitor the wound to make sure that it is progressing appropriately. Good luck
