I do not wish to remove my acrylic nails and eye lash extensions before my breast augmentation.

I am having a breast augmentation. I have been advised to remove them but i cannot see that this is necessary. will be failure to remove them results in my surgery being cancelled or anything of the sort?

Thank you for your question.  Close monitoring of the vital parameters is essential in surgery. There are however many different ways to do it.  Ear probes can be used to monitor the oxygen level in the blood in the same way as a pulse oximeter applied to the fingertip would and my anesthetist and I use them regularly.  However it is essential to ensure that the hands and nails are clean to reduce any potential contamination. With regards to false eyelashes, once again, the eyes can be protected in many different ways by the anesthetist during the procedure. My advice is to check with your surgeon and anesthetist as they will be in charge of your operation and therefore they have to feel comfortable and familiar with the method they use. Best of luckAndrea Marando

It is best if you speak with your surgeon and anesthesiologist about this situation.  These recommendations are for your safety during surgery.  Acrylic nails may interfere with the ability to monitor your oxygen levels during surgery.  Eye lash extensions may interfere with the methods to keep eyes closed and moistened during your procedure.

You need to take the advice of the hospital and team doing your surgery. Speak to your surgeon and ask to speak the anaesthetist. One concern with artificial nails is that they may affect the pulse oximeter which checks the oxygen in your blood. However, the great majority of anaesthetists I work with do not think this is an issue. Where I work  the monitoring usually appears work fine with artificial nails in place. If it does not the probe can be place on a toe or there are earlobe and other sensors that can be used instead. So I do not  advise my patients to remove nails. But you must follow the advice of the team doing your surgery.The second concern with artificial nails is that they can be dirty without it being obvious. I thing that ensuring the nails are clean including under the nails is sufficient.  But you must follow the advice of the team doing your surgery.The issue with eyelashes is that eyelashes could become loose and end up on your eye or under an eyelid. This can make your eyes very sore of even give you an ulcer on the front of your eye. Corneal ulcers are very painful and can be serious. The anaesthetists I work with do not generally find artificial eyelashes a problem and many of my patients have had BBAs with false eyelashes.   But you must follow the advice of the team doing your surgery.In short my anaesthetists and I do not stipulate that these need to be removed for a BBA. However, you should check with your team doing your surgery and you should follow their advice.Best wishes

Only the anesthesiologist performing your surgery can answer this question.  Your nails may prevent the oxygen finger probe from being able to read your saturation during surgery.  Your eyelashes may get in the way from the tape used to help keep your eyes moist during surgery.  I would recommend following the doctors request for your safety.
