Can this scar be excised and stitched to the areola border so that it's no longer visible? Or is too far off the areola laterally? Is there any improvement that can be made surgically? Like excising a crescent shape around the scar? A surgeon told me that that would cause a distortion to the areola shape. Is that true? Thanks.

It is far too distant from the areolar margin to move the scar to that location. You might gain some improvement by excising the scar in an ellipsoid pattern. This would still leave you with a linear scar and there is no assurance that the scar would heal favorably.

From your photograph, it seems that may be you should consider a very simple revision to start.  Maybe just excising the discolored hypertrophic scar would give you a pencil then scar which is closer to the color of your natural skin.  Your chest hair may cover this nicely.  If you try to do something more complicated, and the nipple becomes distorted, there may be no going back…
