Blood test results: Will I have to reschedule my breast augmentation?

Question

I’m to have a breast augmentation on 2/14/24. I did my pre-Op lab tests and these are the results Hemoglobin of 11.5, Hematocrit of 34.2%, and RBC of 4.16 million. I’m a HIV positive patient but I am considered undetectable, I feel as tho I’ve been waiting for a refill on my prescription so that may be why these numbers are how they are

It's best to talk to your primary care provider about your results. If you had higher numbers and they got low is very different than if this is your baseline.

Your primary care doctor, who knows you best, could give you guidance about whether you could be cleared for surgery. As a breast augmentation typically has minimal blood loss,  your hematocrit of 34 should not be an issue.  Iron supplements and suggestions from your primary care doctor may help to boost your hematocrit prior to the procedure. Also clarify this with your Plastic surgeon. Best wishes.

You should be fine with these numbers, but please discuss any concerns with your surgeon.  Hopefully you have discussed your HIV status with your surgeon as well.

Thanks for your question. I suggest your call your primary care doctor to obtain medical clearance before proceeding with your breast augmentation. Also, check with your plastic surgeon to get his/her opinion.

She/He is the one who will review your lab results and determine if it is safe for you to continue with surgery as planned.
