Is all exercise off limits after a breast augmentation?

Hi.  I tell my patients that they can walk unrestricted straight away so long as it doesn't raise a sweat.  At 4 weeks you can do light exercise that raises a light sweat - ie fast walking, gentle stationary bike etc.  no heavy exercise or upper body for 6 weeks.  Regards

Hi,I have a lot of patients that are aerobic instructors, kick boxers, and active runners. My usual routine is to resume gentle aerobic activity (treadmill) two weeks postoperatively and then build up to all activity by four weeks. I avoid 'fly' machine weights for one month. I do not use postoperative wraps, band-do's, or special bras. Patients are generally back to work by one week. My fitness instructors are also back to work in one week as long as they do not lift or strain.Hope this helps,Leland Deane MD FACS

Exercising is always good for the body, now, after surgery, you just have to take some precautions so it doesn't mess up your results or cause you complications. It's recommended that patients wait about 4 weeks before to start exercising; and it's necessary to start with light workout (cardio) and then progressively go back to your regular routine. I hope you find this opinion helpful!

In general, I don't  think you will be comfortable doing any exercise the first two weeks. After that, I think cardio and very light weights are reasonable. But I do recommend avoiding chest exercises the first month post-operatively. Good luck!

After plastic surgery, most surgeons
restrict strenuous activity in the early postoperative period to minimize the
risk of bleeding. We want patients to
walk and not just stay in bed but nothing to get your heart rate up. Lower body exercises and light cardio frequently may be started 2-3 weeks postop depending on individual patient healing.

Each surgeon has his own post-op instructions. If you were my patient, I would tell you no vigorous activity or heavy lifting for 3 weeks following surgery. Regarding upper body workouts that engage your chest muscles, I like my patients to wait 3 months. After that, you can resume doing whatever you'd like. Best of luck!

Thank you very much for this interesting enquire.Postoperative care after a breast augmentation are very important to get the best results.Generally speaking, the average of Breast Augmentation patients, exercises tend to allow two weeks after PO, gradually: first, gentle walks without sweating, then, you can go to the gym to do aerobics, and, after four months you can stats with machines excercise and start with light weights, and, if there are no problems, only six months after PO may charge "free weights".Respectfully, Dr. Emmanuel Mallol Cotes.-

Generally, light to moderate exercise can be resumed after 2-3 weeks and gradually increased. Every patient is different and I would suggest discussing a plan for resuming your exercise routine with your surgeon.

No heavy exercise for 4 weeks to avoid chest strain, but light walking is ok during the first 1-2 weeks. In general, nothing jarring or painful- it could cause problems with the implants.  Some lower body exercises may still place strain on the chest.

Thank you for asking. Exercise is possible after augmentation surgery. It depends on your surgery specifics and what exercises you'll be doing. In general lower body is ok after a few weeks. Keep in mind that healing is better when the body is rested enough. Talk with your board certified PS who knows your specific case/procedure. Best wishes
