There are a number of options regarding platysma plasty and usually they involve a scar under the chin. The scar is well hidden as long as it is far enough back from the tip of the chin. In terms of bruising, it can be moderate but easily covered with a high collar or a scarf. The bruising and swelling tend to settle after 10 days but the final result due to stiffness is not usually obtained for three months or so. I hope that helps, regards, Adam Goodwin.
Bruising after platysmaplasty (or any other procedure) varies with each individual patient. There are many things that can be done prior to the procedure to minimize the bruising, but no surgeon can guarantee that you will not have bruising. I have patients that have virtually no bruising and patients that have deep purple bruises for a couple of weeks. Neck bruises tend to disappear fairly rapidly due to gravity, even when it occurs. Long hair can help hide the bruises as well as theatrical make-up. A platysmaplasty generally involves both lateral suspension of the muscle as well as suturing the medial borders of the muscle in the midline which requires an incision under the chin. This is the best way to get you the inverted "L" profile that you desire. My Best!John Standefer MD
