How long after rhinoplasty are stitches removed?

Question

I recently traveled abroad to have surgery. He took the cast off on the 4th day even though my eyes were so black they would not open and it clearly wasn't ready . He took the splints out at the same time and I lost so much blood then i thought i was going to die . I came home and he told me to take stitches out ten days after I leave . So that would of been 16 days after surgery . When i google this it says I will scar and need to be out on 7th day . He told all the girls different days

Thank you for your question.The sutures after a Rhinoplasty are usually removed between 7-10 days, 10 days being the longest that I would allow for them to remain in. The longer the sutures stay in, the higher potential for scarring.

Thank you for your question.  Sutures should be removed when the incision has healed adequately enough that removing the sutures won't cause the incision to gap open.  Typically in a rhinoplasty, this is at the 7-10 day mark.  Leaving sutures in longer can lead to "suture tracks".I recommend asking your surgeon for clarification.  You traveled abroad for surgery, so hopefully your doctor continues to provide good information and guidance to you, and isn't one of the doctors that has you "fend for yourself" when you get home.Best,Dr. Michael EpsteinMAE Plastic SurgeryNorthbrook, IL

Splints and sutures are usually all removed at one week after surgery, although this varies from surgeon to surgeon.  It is generally agreed that over this time period sutures could leave marks.

Every patient is different and it is best to follow your surgeon's instructions.  In general, 7-10 days is best, however.. there may be a reason he does not want to remove them earlier.  Some of the reasons may include absorbable sutures which may be taken out at a later time or also may be allowed to dissolve on their own.  Second, he/she may have a wound healing reason.  Good luck and follow up with your surgeon regularly as scheduled by office staff

I remove rhinoplasty sutures for most patients on day 6 or 7. 16 days seems a bit long, but surgeons can have varying protocols and use different types of suture.

In my practice, splints and tapes are removed at seven days post op.  I usually start to remove any sutures that are ready to come out at that time with all sutures gone by two weeks.  Marks from sutures can occur if left in for too long but this depends on location, closure technique and type of suture material.  I recommend talking to your surgeon regarding these important questions.

Usually Sutures are removed after about one week in my practice, some surgeons may leave them for two weeks.  Every physician has different protocols so it's best to check with your individual surgeon.

As a general rule, sutures or stitches on the face are removed within 5 to 7 days. This prevents scarring from the sutures themselves and is possible due to the fact that the face heals quickly. The nasal splint is usually removed after 7 days however occasionally it is either kept in place longer or replaced with a new splint or nasal tape in order to help decrease swelling and to help keep the nasal bones in their proper position.
