Can the hump on the nose bridge be kept and are there any risks with it? (ethnic rhinoplasty)

Question

I'm a South Asian girl with Arabic heritage. I have a aquilline" nose with a small bump on the bridge, the bump is what makes my nose look short. When a sibling of mine had surgery some years ago with a renowed French surgeon he said that he had "never seen something similar before in the nosehump, it was impossible to remove the whole hump". Because of the hard material in the nosebump he wasn't able to shave down the nosebump correctly. Can I still keep my bump post surgery without risks?

During a primary (first time) rhinoplasty, typically a dorsal hump can be removed to straighten the profile.  While there are no risks in maintaining a bump, there is also no risk - when performed by a rhinoplasty specialist - in removing the bump completely.

The nasal hump can be preserved during a rhinoplasty. Many times only tip-plasty is needed or alarplasty and osteotomies on the side walls. All of these can be done without touching the hump.RegardsDr. J

Many ethnicities have distinct dorsal humps. Some like it to be smoothed down and other patients want to keep their hump. Both options are available to the patient seeking rhinoplasty. It's 100% their preference. Either way is equally safe too. I recommend consulting with a rhinoplasty surgeon experienced in ethnic rhinoplasty. Humps are challenging to put back once removed. Particularly in this situation, computer simulations can help the patient and surgeon get on the same page regarding the height of the dorsal hump for a safe and desired outcome.

The dorsal hump is composed of both bone and cartilage and can be removed when necessary. It can also be left alone if the patient so desires to leave it behind. Leaving a dorsal hump behind will be an incomplete rhinoplasty but it's the patient's choice. For many examples, please see the link below

The biggest risk is that you will regret your decision to keep the hump. I've had similar requests from rhinoplasty patients over the years. Almost all have come back to later to remove the hump. In over 35 years of doing rhinoplasty surgery I've never seen a hump that could not be removed.
