After neck lift and chin lipo, I noticed this concavity to my mandibular angle. It appears facial tissue was removed. What are my options to permanently fix this?

Answer: Preauricular volume loss after facelift. A facelift and the neck lift are more or less interchangeable terms. A facelift treats the lower one third of the face and neck. The procedure can create loss of the subcutaneous fat in front of the ear. Tissue is not removed from this area, and if anything fat is sometimes grafted in the mid face as part of the procedure by some providers. While not ideal, what you experienced does happen from time to time from this procedure. Volume restoration can be done using fillers or fat grafting. Fillers are temporary, but offer many advantages. Fillers in comparison to fat transfer tend to be more precise, predictable, and more forgiving if the patients don’t like the outcome. Talk to your provider about your concerns or consider having second opinion consultations with other plastic surgeons in your community. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
