Kybella results/nodules at 5 weeks after 1 treatment?

Question

I know most Drs advise 2-4 treatments, but in 3 consults, 2 Drs agreed 1 rx shld yield good results, 1 Dr rec 1-2 rx (I know are estimates, but note b/c all felt the expectation was realistic. At 5 wks, i see no improvement & though shrinking & “migrating”, I still have 2-3 small hard nodules under my chin. Shouldn’t I hv seen SOME progress by now as a poss 1rx candidate? Will the fat area w/ nodules shrink as they do? Realistically, shld I hope to still see noticeable change?

In my opinion, and I am not alone in this, Kybella is an expensive bummer.  Generally it really does take 6 sessions of Kybella to get a satisfactory result.  At the end of 6 sessions at one month intervals, 40% of patients will be dissatisfied with the results.  In addition, the treatment is very uncomfortable and causes a lot of swelling.  Some experience transient and permanent nerve damage. Neck liposuction is much more reliable and actually less expensive.

i suggest RF treatment at this time with massage and light therapy.  it can sometimes takes up to 3 months to get improvement.  you will need more than one treatment for improvement.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Dear Allisone03,Kybella typically takes 3 to 5 treatments to work. This is why I've stopped carrying Kybella in my office.  I recommend neck liposuction more often then any injectable procedure for the neck now. It provides superior results gives me more control over the area than any injectable.  It also costs about the same as what you paid for your first kybella session. Kybella (Deoxcholic Acid) is the first non-surgical, FDA approved injection to reduce submental fat. Some of the side-effects include bruising, swelling, redness and numbness. To reduce this we as patients to discontinue any blood thinners prior to their treatment, and recommend an anti-inflammatory post treatment. Treatments are done once every 4-6 weeks, for up to 5 sessions.
Always discuss these possible side-effects prior to treatment.

With my eyes it looks like you got a very acceptable result of not only a more improved jawline and neck profile but tightening of loose skin.  Your chin looks more youthful and it appears you may have also had filler in the marionette lines or some tightening procedure.  Remodeling may still be in progress but after one Kybella treatment in my opinion it met expectations.  People in the clinical trials usually had 6 treatments.  The average recommendation is probably 3-4.  Nodules may be improved with radiofrequency.

In general, it takes 2-3 sessions and at least 2-3 vials per session to see results with Kybella.  I have seen marked improvements after the second treatment, much more than after the first.  The nodules will resolve.  I am sorry the 2 doctors you saw told you one treatment would be enough.  That was overpromising and probably under delivering.

Thanks for your question. It is difficult to compare your photos because of the difference in lighting and angle. You certainly do not need neck liposuction. Palpable irregularities/"nodules" are not uncommon even at the 5 week Kybella post treatment point, but they do eventually go away ( in my experience might take another few weeks after the 5 week mark). You might want to consider getting a TruSculpt 3D treatment of that submental region to get significantly more skin tightening along with some residual fat cell destruction. It is safe, simple,and  non invasive.
