How Do Implants Feel Natural Feel Under The Muscle?

Several things go into having a breast implant feel (and look) the most natural.

My opinions here, others may differ.

First, under or partially under the muscle hides the implants better.  They look and feel more natural.

Conservative size choices, where the implant diameter doesn't exceed the diameter of the breast, tend to produce more realistic results.

Silicone implants feel and look better than saline implants.

Artistic choices with respect to breast droop, tubular breast problems, breast asymmetry, nipple appearance all factor in as well.

Although the implant is under the muscle, there are also layers of natural fat, breast tissue, and skin that will give it that soft feel. Muscle is also very soft and gets thinner as time goes on.

There are pros and cons to placing an implant above or under the muscle.  When implants are placed under the muscle it takes longer for that muscle to stretch and loosen up than it does for breast tissue to soften.  Initially, your implants will probably sit a little high and be very tight.  I tell my patients that I don't look for my final results with over the muscle placement for two or three weeks, under the muscle for two or three months.  I also tell them that the implant is pushing the chest muscle out into the breast so that the muscle is now a part of the breast.  With that in mind, I advise them to avoid doing flys and other exercises in the gym designed to build up the chest muscle.  We want that muscle soft and pliable, not tight and toned.

The submuscular position of an implant and the biplanar dissection makes the implant more natural in appearance.  when feeling the breasts there is skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and implant.  The pectoralis muscle will get thinner with time and the silicone implant feels more like breast tissue.

Hello pinneduppunkedup. Great question. When you feel the breasts after an augmentation one is actually feeling the skin, breast tissue and muscle. All of these tissues are indeed natural. Great question!  Implants placed under the muscle can most certainly feel squishy and natural- if the implant is appropriately sized for your tissue characteristics.  In addition, it is important to remember that implants are very rarely placed completely beneath the muscle, the lower lateral portion of the implant is usually below the level of the muscle to give a natural look  and shape like this:

 

so you can imagine that having am appropriately sized, shaped, and placed implant will give you a great natural look and feel.

The muscle, if released properly, is soft like all of the other overlying tissue, and when it is cut to put the implant underneath, it becomes a bit more flaccid on the lower end.  Sometimes when ladies contract their muscle it can become firmer and tighter, and this may even cause some movement in the implant or the breast, but this is a common occurrence with submuscular implants, and just a trade off that we accept for all of the benefits of putting the implants there.

Silicone implants under the muscle will feel soft. The muscle adds another layer of coverage but is divided over its inferior border to allow the implant to sit appropriately in the pocket.

Today, breast implants have a natural feel, both under the muscle and over the muscle. The silicone implant is softer and a more natural feel compared to the saline implant. The muscle is naturally soft and will not make the implant feel hard. The muscle does provide more coverage of the implant in the upper part of the breast, but will not make it feel hard. Right after surgery, the muscle is tight and the breast will feel much firmer. The muscle does relax with time and becomes more natural in feel and movement.

Thank you for your question.  Silicone as a material mimics the feel of natural tissue.  Placement under the muscle separates the implant from soft tissue and breast tissue and better camouflages the implant, giving a more natural feel.  Of course, that would be dependent on the size of the implant with respect to your anatomy. The larger the implant, that is, where the implant exceeds the natural anatomical landmarks, the more risk for a palpable implant.  I would recommend that you discuss your question further with your plastic surgeon.  Best of luck, Dr Vlad.
