I have a paraumbilical hernia. My General Surgeon consulted with me and confirmed that he is unable to do my repair laparoscopically because of the size and my stomach has a large flap with this hernia. My doctor said he has to do a tummy tuck afterwards. Is this normal? Are general surgeons able to perform a surgery of such? Are they able to perform lipo in order to get the correct results?

Answer: Tummy tuck and hernia repair I would recommend having your general surgeon work in conjunction with a board-certified plastic surgeon on this. The general surgeon can do the hernia repair and the plastic surgeon is more qualified to do the tummy tuck.

Answer: General Surgeon Doing Tummy Tuck I was trained and board certified as both a general and plastic surgeon. General surgeons are not trained to do tummy tuck although they may perform panniculectomy or skin removal. If you can find a plastic surgeon with general surgery training, they could do both. the alternative is to let a board-certified plastic surgeon do the tummy tuck, and call in a general surgeon to fix the hernia.

Answer: Can a general surgeon repair a hernia then do a tummy tuck? In my opinion the Plastic Surgeon could raise the Tummy Tuck flap and then the General Surgeon can treat the hernia and then the Plastic Surgeon should compete the tummy tuck. Following the General Surgeon's repair of the hernia- then the Board Certified PS can complete the Tummy Tuck. If the General Surgeon has privileges at the Hospital to perform a Tummy Tuck and has experience performing Cosmetic Surgeries - then he may be able to perform the Tummy Tuck. Keep in mind that most Plastic Surgeons are also Board Certified in General surgery
