I last got lip filler 3 years ago, i was told it was Juvederm but I now have lumps that won’t go away. How do i remove them?

I was injected with what i was told was Juvederm at a friends house( i know that was a bad idea now) by someone who claimed to be an “injector”(again,i know bad idea) and she gave me 3 CCs into my top and bottom lip over the course of 3 visits in 2 months. That was 3 years ago and all i have now are hard discolored lumps. I’m afraid she gave me something other than juvederm but I’m not sure if there’s any way to tell.

This is a difficult question, and I'm sorry for your problem.  There is no way to know exactly what product you have, causing these lumps.  You could potentially try injection with hyaluronidase, kenalog, or if those fail, excision of the lumps.For those reading along at home:  don't fall for the lure of cheap fillers that are not performed by a licensed medical provider in a medical setting with an FDA-approved and unadulterated product.

Juvederm products do not last 3 years, so it is likely that you were injected with something else.  I recommend visiting with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area for an examination.  If it is Juvederm or another HA filler it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

Hello there! I have seen Juvederm last longer than a year in patients. I would highly recommend consulting with an expert injector in regards to this. There is a substance on the market that can dissolve or "reverse filler". I would recommend getting this reversed. It may take several applications for this to be fully corrected, and even after several, you may still have issues remaining. If this is not a hyaluronic acid, it will not reverse, and steps will need to be taken to remove it manually. Good luck to you! Sarah RN BSN

This most likely was not Juvederm that was injected.  Juvederm lasts on average 6 months so it is highly unlikely there would still be Juvederm left over 3 years later. I recommend a consultation with an experienced provider.  Hyaluronidase may be used if it is an HA filler or Kenalog injections if it is some kind of ganulomatous reaction.

Juvederm products last usually only 6-18 months. So this must be illegal filler used? Only direct excision offers best remedy. But you could try HA dissolver injections @ $500 per injection. to see if any improvement is obtained.

Sorry for your predicament. In general Juvederm will not last 3 years. It is a hyaluronic Acid (HA) compound and it can be dissolved. Check with your doctor. Good Luck!

It's very unfortunate that you had such a terrible experience. Most likely this was not Juvederm that was injected into your lips but a non medical grade silicone. You need to be seen by a plastic surgeon in your area who can biopsy a small nodule and treat you accordingly once the diagnosis is made. Good luck from New York City

Firstly, a diagnosis is important - lip swelling can be related to your HA Juvederm injections, or they can rarely be a manifestation of other systemic conditions- granulamous chelitis, sarcoid, etc... Now, Juvederm can RARELY last more than 12-18 months in this location. Lumps most likely due to antigenic cross reaction or another manifestation of chronic (late) filler reactions (biofilm etc). History, examination and investigations can rule out other causes. So, what next? Special enzymes can dissolve the filler. In absence of any contraindications, this could be done under Pred cover to decrease, not eliminate swelling. Most likely 2-3 session needed, spaced 2-4 weeks apart. All the best, Dr Davin S. Lim. I'm sorry about your situation. I'm glad you realize the errors but I'm sorry it came to this. You can certainly try hyaluronidase injections into the lips but that will only work if it's an HA filler. A biopsy of the lip tissue may prove useful if dissolving doesn't work.
