Is it normal for chin filler (Juvederm or Radiesse) to swell up and hurt 2 months after the injection?

I got one syringe of filler about 2 months ago for my chin at a reputable place in the city. I had the usual swelling, pain and no bruising but now a couple of months passed and out of no where it started to hurt a lot. As if I hit my chin really hard. Now it’s a tiny bit swollen and the area feels very hard and stiff, like a rock. Feels as if I just got the injection. I’m very concerned that I’m getting these symptoms months later. My under eye and cheek fillers are completely fine.

No, this is not normal and may be a delayed reaction or infection. I have seen this a couple of times in patients who have had Radiesse injected by other injectors. It's one reason why I don't use the product myself. It can also happen with Hyaluronic Acid fillers such as Juvederm. You need to be evaluated as soon as possible by a physician who has experience dealing with filler complications. Best wishes.

Hi Bella, this delayed reaction 2 months after injection isn't normal. I would suggest following up with the injector - or, better yet, get a formal consultation with a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and facial sculpting expert. Ultimately you may decide to reverse the treatment with hyaluronidase. Technique is really important when dealing with fillers, so you'll want to see an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Your timeline and description of the problem sound very much like a delayed reaction to the filler, which may be infectious, due to the formation of a biofilm, or inflammatory, whose causes are less clear. In any case, you need to contact the treating physician who to determine the problem and initiate treatment, which may consist of oral antibiotics, injections of hyaluronidase, and possibly injections of other anti-inflammatories. Make sure that you are actually seeing a board certified aesthetic physician. Best of luck

Thankyou for your question.this is a delayed swelling and yes the product can go hard. You need to go back to your injector and he/she will assess and decide if you need antibiotics +/- hyalase to dissolve some of the product. good luck and I hope this helps

While this type of reaction is not normal, I have seen cases similar to what you are describing, particularly with the Juvederm Vycross fillers. Based on your description, you may be experiencing a delayed inflammatory reaction to the filler. These can present weeks to months after filler injection and may be related to the development of a biofilm in the area. I have treated these cases with antibiotics and they eventually do resolve. I would suggest consulting with your provider or one experienced in filler complications to discuss your case in more detail.

This is a uncommon but well known delayed complication of HA fillers, most commonly Vycross. I usually see 4-5 per year. This could be due to 1. Biofilm reaction/ infection 2. Most commonly a cross antigen reaction with a virus/ bacterium / mycobacterial infection AWAY from the filler. This type 4 reaction settles over time. Most commonly seen with Vycross fillers due to their constant 'morphing' of their antigenic presentation. How to manage this? The differentation from a TRUE biofilm reaction needs to be considered. There after its up to your specialist as to how to decrease inflammation. Personally I cover with anti-inflammatory ABs and tabs, some prefer to dissolve with Hylase enzyme.
