Lip injections & cold sores?

Question

Can you get lip injections if you get cold sores? I get maybe 1 or 2 a year and they are very minor as long as I use abreva from the first sign. What would I need to do before and after injections to minimize the possibility of cold sores?

You can have lip injections even if you have a history of cold sores.  Some providers might suggest a course of antivirals (Valtrex) prior to and after your treatment.  Good luck!

Cschultz85.   As long as there is no active outbreak, there should be no problem having lip augmentation with fillers.  Just let your doctor know about your history. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Good luck!

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) is a common condition with symptoms that include burning rashes, and blisters. The virus lies dormant leaving some patients unaware they are carriers. HSV1 can be reactivated by an injury, including lip injections. Discuss taking anti-viral medication with your physician prior to your next lip injection. This may lessen the chance of reoccurrence.

Injections of fillers or other medications in the upper or lower lips can activate cold sores. Pre-existing cold sores at the time of your treatment can allow the virus to spread to other areas of your mouth or face during injections on the lips. To prevent this, you can take Valtrex or Famvir pills for a couple of days before the injections to prevent a cold sore from appearing before your treatment or after your treatment. You will need to get a prescription for either of the above meds from the doctor who will be injecting your lips.

Yes you can get lip injections. I would recommend prophylactic treatment with an antiviral like valtrex prior to being injected.

you can yes but not when the cold sore is present. if it is particularly recurrent problem an antiviral cream can help.
