Drains and compression garments: how is it possible to wear a compression garment with drains?

When undergoing abdominoplasty as part of a mommy makeover, some surgeons use an abdominal binder and others may use a compression garment. Often a drain is placed. The compression garments are crotchless and usually when I am using a compression garment in the patient as a drain, this gets routed through the crotchless part of the garment.  Seems to work very well.

Thank you for your question.  Your compression garment will fit nicely over your drainage tubes.  Generally the drainage tubes can be connected to your garment to keep your hands free.  If possible, have your surgeon show you the garment and drainage tubes prior to surgery to help you understand the process.  Best of luck!

Dear misskaymae88,yes, you can use compression garments with your drains. They help with fluid buildup and control movement that may otherwise widen your scars. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MD

Your compression garment will fit over your drainage tubes.  The collection portion of the drains can often be attached to the garment.  Your surgeon will show you how to care for your garment and drains.  It is commonly done after the Mommy Makeover.

I recommend my patients to wear a binder after a tummy tuck, and once the drains are removed a compassion garment is used. Consult your surgeon for post op instructions since each surgeon has a slightly different protocol.

It is recommended to use the compression belt for a period of three months after the operation. In fact, if you stop using it during the first 15 days of the postoperative period, with a rest of two hours a day, inflammations may occur that affect the intervened area and cause alterations in the desired silhouette.
