I have a dent in my lip after Juvederm filler. What is happening?

Hello, I am about a week out of Juvederm lip fillers, and I seem to be developing a dent in my left upper lip. I researched others experiencing the same problem, but there is not much info for “dented” lips. I have an appointment to go over this with the (board certified) doctor who did the injections, but any advice on what is happening would be appreciated. The first picture is before filler, second picture is right after the procedure, and the following photos are a few days after.

Thank you for your pictures and questions. After only a week, there is likely still some swelling in the area and it usually takes about 2 weeks for that to go away completely and for the final result to be revealed. Try to be patient and follow up with your expert injector. If there is some unevenness (and this can easily happen), it can usually be corrected with some additional filler, or if it is too large, some of the product can be dissolved.Hope this helps!Dallas R. There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Dear scarlet_begonias88,Juvederm has significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks. Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve. Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs.  It appears that the dent is the result of either excess tissue swelling, or filler placement, in the portion of your central lip in front of the dent.  I advise seeing your injector for an in-person examination and discussion as they should be able to provide you with the best advice based on your goals - either dissolving a small amount of filler from the area of fullness, waiting for the swelling to resolve, or adding filler to the dent.  Hope this helps.

It is difficult to tell from the photo, but it could either be too little filler in that area, or too much filler or a lump adjacent to that area.  It is a relatively easy problem to correct-- you either add more filler where it is dented in, or dissolve filler where there is too much.  Since you are only 1 week out from the procedure, it may very well be swelling or a bruise next to the "dented" area.  I would recommend waiting at least 2-3 weeks before correcting anything.

Swelling is common after lip injections and can take up to two weeks to resolve.  You may want to try gentle massage of the area.  Your doctor can dissolve the product with hyaluronidase if it is still bothersome.

Thank you for your question.  It appears you have too much filler in the central portion of your lip giving off the appearance of an indention lateral to that area.  Please follow up with your Board Certified Dermatologist (not just any board certified physician, as the core aesthetic specialists are the experts) for proper evaluation and management.  You may consider tincture of time to see if the swelling goes down, reversing the filler or injecting into the area that appears indented. Either there was not enough HA filler used or purchased or the injecting MD missed that area. Touch up injections are very common so best to seek one, since you have been over a week since injections were done..

At just one week after lip filler you certainly still have some swelling in the area.  As I do with my patients, I would encourage you to wait at least two weeks after your treatment for any reevaluation and/or adjustment, as you do not have your final results yet. I’m glad that you have a follow up with your injector as I find this to be very important and I also do this with my patients as well. At that time if there still a concern, as noted by others, you can either have more filler in the area or dissolve a small amount in the surrounding area to even out the contour. This is a problem that I feel can be easily addressed. Good luck
