Should I buy a walker? Cane?

Early mobilization after cosmetic surgery is paramount to quicker recovery and preventing complications such as deep venous thrombosis.  I encourage my patients to allow time for healing but also make daily progress towards complete healing.  After healing I council all my patients on the importance of diet and proper exercise to maintain the results you have worked so hard for.

Congratulations on scheduling your multiple procedures. I have had several patients use walkers after larger operations and they're a really great help! My attitude is that if it's going to help you walk more and recover faster, then sure it will be worth it.

Hello, a walker likely wouldn't be a bad idea postoperatively, although the majority of my patients get along just fine by slumping forward a little for the first week after surgery.

Hi wisjenI would check with your doctor first.I tell all my patients NO!  These devices are trip and fall hazards, so they increase risk.  You should have a human help you during the early post op period.On that note, if you have throw rugs, they should be put up.Thanks.Sek

The short answer is use whatever you need to get around safely. Most of my patients do not need one, but you know your body and ability better than anyone. If you expect to be laid up for a while you should consider making sure you have someone in the home to assist you until you are able to care for yourself. Best of luck.

Thanks you for your question.  Most individuals do well after surgery without a walker.  However,  if you have other issues such as arthritis in the knees and hips, it may be helpful for steadiness.  Also, unless you know how to use a walker one could also trip and fall.  You should discuss the pros and cons with your surgeon before getting a walker or a cane.
