Breast reduction regrets / loss of sensation. Is there anything I can do to fix these issues?

I had a breast reduction at the age of 17. My weight had been fluctuating throughout high school and at the time I got it, I had gained weight and wanted a quick fix. I am now 24, and regret it deeply. I did not think through consequences and risks and have lost nipple sensation (barely feel a flick), and some of my right nipple had necrosis around the edges making it looked almost deformed. Is there anything I can do to fix these issues? It’s affecting my confidence and I miss my old boobs.

Unfortunately, sensation loss and necrosis are some of the side effects of the surgery. Sensation usually comes back but in your case, it’s been longer than the expected time frame. We as surgeons, discuss all the details pre surgery therefore patients are aware of the risks of complications after their surgeries.

The aesthetic appearance can often be improved with a revision. There is currently no practical way to restore your sensation.

The shape of your nipple areola complex and the breast itself can be corrected. Any improvement in nipple sensation after so many years is unlikely. The necrotic scarred area can be revised. Surgery will not improve decreased sensation which is a risk of any breast surgery.  I would suggest meeting with a board certified plastic surgeon and discussing your concerns and options.

I'm sorry to hear you are unhappy with your breast reduction.  Unfortunately there isn't anything that can be done to restore the loss of sensation.  Since it has been 7 years this change is likely permanent.  As for the shape of the breast and areola they can likely be improved.  I encourage you to begin by visiting with a board certified plastic surgeon near you to discuss your concerns.

Be reassured that there is always something that can be done to improve breast size, shape, and scars. Correction may even require a small implant or fat grafting, which seems crazy because the initial problem was caused by breasts that were too large. There are new procedures that can improve sensation as well. It's OK to seek out a second opinion.
